Far too few of them, if I must say.
I was expecting page 111 of Book 5 for some time now, but I was caught by surprise at how quickly it came. Not exactly as in the books, but close enough and just as satisfying.
And this came after I spent the first half hour bellowing at the TV "That's not in the books!" while swilling some Yuengling Lager.

Ave atque vale, Lord Slynt.

And the Sansa subplot? What's your thought on that? That is a huge departure from the books.

John the OFM26 Apr 2015 7:49 p.m. PST

I don't think it will go well.
If she is still the weepy submissive Sansa of old, and Littlefinger has been summoned back to King's Landing…
However, the maid did say "The North Remembers". And Lyanna Mormont has been defiant, and Stannis marches…
Ramsey's sweetie is smoldering…

I keep reading rumors of pie. But there are no Freys about.
Oh,wait. There's Walda….Naaaah.

Imho it was a little boring. Save for John Snow… he remember me father Stark in the first chapter (smile).

About the kidnaping… who is the queen he mention? Kaleese or the other evil one?.

Don't get very well what about the political move with the "religion" guy…

I thought that Sansa's story arc was improving but Ramsay? There is no punishment severe enough for that sicko.

I was SO waiting for the Janos Slint scene, one of my favorites from the book. John should have really repilied, "we're ALL scared" before the chop. Whatever. Unusually, the HBO version dragged it out longer than the book (which very much reminded me of the "got a light?" moment from Gibson's Payback , but it was still worth it.

Since the "Fake Arya / Mance Rader's back" thing's not happening, subbing her sister is a good lightning cut. I like how HBO Mance went out, and hated that from the book, anyway.

I was really wondering why the swapped out Stannis and John's attitudes towards the Wildlings. It seemed an uneccessary switch, and I think it makes it harder to settle up where John, um, ends up at the end of book 5.

I will miss the more books' complex "Circe sells her student loans to the First Radical Fundamentalist Church without reading the fine print" plotline. But this one kicked off with nekkid girls, so I'll settle.

Rattleshirt was not on hand for Mance's …. but Thornund was.

One slight change that I loved.
Jon appointed Ser Alliser First Ranger just before he sent Ser Janos to Greyguard. The look that Ser Alliser gave to Lord Slynt when he was begging for help was priceless.

That was a great bit.

The changes for Sansa are good – it keeps what, 20 extra characters out of the plot? Same for Tyrion. I forget, Is HBO doing in one season what took took over-large books to cover?

Actually, they seem to have covered books 4 and 5 in 2 seasons pretty handily. We're rapidly reaching the point where plot points for the TV will go beyond plot points in the book, and that's a good thing.

I've read all the books, but I'm wondering if we even need Martin any more. The writers of the tv series (which have worked directly with Martin, I get that) seem to have come up with more interesting and less bloated ways to get to the point.

I'm honestly starting to wonder if it's even worth reading the book conclusion whenever Martin gets around to it.

"Someone once told me to keep my enemies close."
"He mustn't have had many enemies."

I for one do not miss Aryanna Martel and Arrys Oakheart. Nor do I miss Euron and Victarion. They were cooked up back when Martin could afford to wander and digress for hundreds of bloated and extraneous pages.

It's also nice to see that Tommen and Margaery are, ahem, enjoying married life. Unlike in the books where he would be 8 years old.
You go, Tommen.

The Beast Rampant27 Apr 2015 12:19 p.m. PST

He was eight TWO SEASONS ago. He was "soap opera aged" because sleepovers with hot chicks is more spicey this way. Also, conveniently enough, an older Tommen is more susceptible to the "you're all grown up now, be your own man"
scheme Maggie's running, which plays better. More credit to the screenwriters.

Winston Smith27 Apr 2015 1:43 p.m. PST

@TGerritsen. I'll read the books, if only to see what happened to Jeyne Westerling, Robb 's will, Ben Stark….
