Hi everyone,

On Friday I will be jumping on the train and heading off to Dresden to visit my daughter. Friday afternoon will see a visit to the military museum, Saturday morning a trip to a flea market that my daughter swears has lots of military stuff (I am somewhat skeptical), and then in the car to Leipzig to visit the 1813 battlefield.

If I have any spare time, I would love to visit a game or model shop. Any suggestions?

Unsure of any game shops, but you might want to consider a visit to list place while at Leipzig. link

Amazing collection of dioramas in part of the old Chateau complex.

The memorial is amazing.
We went to Colditz which is not far away.
You can go shopping any time :-)

I am very much looking forward to the memorial. I have seen it on the internet of course, but for real will be great.

As for shopping, here in the Czech Republic there isnīt much in the way of game shops, so I try to get stuff when and where I can. I always bring an extra bag everywhere I go to carry home any acquisitions. grin

If you go to the Dresden army museum, the tour through all of it will take you a day and you'll exit as a doctor of military history, thats if you aren't one already.
The museum is really large. Among the largest military museums I know of. They did too much. Overdone, but it does have a lot of exciting stuff. A MUST VISIT.

The best shop in the area is Berliner Zinnfiguren shop. But that's in Berlin, Charlottenbourg near Savignyplatz. If you manage to do the Dresden museum in a quick and dirty short visit, you may want to consider forcing the Elbe river and push forward all the way to Berlin. ;-)

I was there last week and the trip was great. At the flea market I managed to pick up some trees and a village, all for 11 euros.
The memorial in Leipzig was certainly massive! I was a bit disappointed by the museum there though.
The highlight of the trip was definitely the army museum in Dresden. I was with my daughter so I couldnīt stay as long as I would have liked, but it was fantastic. I like how they have it arranged by era and the collection is quite extensive. Great stuff!
On a side note, my daughter is a surgeon and she enjoyed the battlefield medicine displays, especially the amputated foot in the WWI section (something I could have done without!).

Be sure to visit the new German Military History Museum in Dresden. I am working on a loan to them. "Militar Historisches Museum"

There's a pub not far from the Leipzig memorial that still has musket balls embedded in the wooden beams in the structure of the building, from the battle.

And the Leipzig memorial was the battlefield for a tough defense by diehard SS attacked by the US Army 69th Infantry Division in 1945. So look carefully for bullet chips in the stonework.

You can go to game shops any time, I'd spend more time at the Dresdner Museum and the Leipzig battlefield.
