Thanks for posting this Tim.

He called his four sons "The Tank Crew"!

The highlights of my armour officer training were the visits and pep talks from "Rad". His war stories were fascinating but always contained a practical lesson. The most common of these was to "use smoke, and lots of it", but there were others, and they were all very sensible.

A truly great man.

Visits, by the lowliest trooper, to his home by Algonquin Park would be legendary. It was his open invitation from the junior most rank to the top.

"What do you mean you have to be back in lines by that time.
Here let me call the Adj and tell him that you are keeping me company until I am d***ed well happy for you to go."

The next days conversation with the RSM and CO would go something along the lines of,"So,,,,he called that you would be late.", and not another word would be dared said…..

Many don't realize that his was also most likely the tank to have taken out Wittmann in Normandy. Those Tigers literally drove into a pocket with a British tank brigade on one side and a Canadian tank brigade on the other.

He was always pretty humble about the possibility. "So long as one of us got him!" Apparently seeing the muzzle of a Tiger through your gun sight was not an experience to repeat.

His body may have finally failed him but his memory will live on! The boy from Gaspe belongs to all of Canada now. This vast land seems a little more empty since his passing but we were lucky to have him for 95 years. God's speed Sydney Radley-Walters and may you find peace.

Gracious and unpretentious to all he met.
