I've been working on my Mediterranean Fleet, unit by unit. Here are some photos of Pridham-Wippell's forces

From front: HMS Ajax, HMAS Perth, HMS Gloucester and HMS Orion

Closer view of Gloucester, with Ajax in background

And of Perth and, in the background, Orion

We're going to try out Battlestations! Battlestations! as the Med battles could involve quite a few ships. In BB a flagship must be nominated – the authors recommend those self-adhesive circular labels, but I thought I'd knock up a Vice Admiral's flag

The flag uses part of an earring clip (cheaply available from craft shops), a pin and a hand painted flag. Because I use magnetic bases it moves with the ship, but can be removed should Sir Henry need to transfer his flag

To accompany the cruisers I've also painted up part of Nicholson's 2nd Destroyer Flotilla (HMS Ilex, HMS Hasty, HMS Hereward and HMAS Vendetta). Here's HMS Hereward

And finally here's the fleet as it stands at the moment, with HMS Warspite and HMS Valiant

I still have to put some gloss varnish on the bases to match the battleships. Next project: get some of the Italians done so Young Henry and I can start lobbing shells (well, dice) at each other!

Best wishes,

Nick

The earring clip is clever. I'm always wandering the craft store and home improvement stores looking for stuff to repurpose.

Lucky find for me – my daughter had a broken one in a craft set for Christmas

Oh, by the way – ships are Navwar 1:3000. Forgot to mention

The flag is an interesting touch. I have a friend who flags all his Napoleonic ships with flags on tiny loops that you can actually hang from the halyard, allowing you to remove them when a ship strikes, or replace them in the event of a capture. (It also allows him to proxy ships from fleet to fleet with some ease.) But he doesn't do officers flags, just naval ensigns. And your Skytrex ships are a great deal smaller than his Napoleonics.

nice. Thought about what scenario?

Thanks Vic

To get back into naval (and wargaming, for that matter) I got a battle pack from Navwar; I was interested in the Med Theatre so I got the Matapan pack. It not only gives all you need for that battle, but with a few additions (the older Italian BBs, some additional cruisers for both sides) I can play pretty much any historical scenario or a plausible variation of them.

When I have enough historic squadrons/flotillas I'll make cards for each so I can randomly select a few a side (with the possibility of 'drawing a blank') to randomly generate Med scenarios.
