Put a few short thoughts together of the new Codex that seems to be setting other forums on fire…

Good review. Thanks for that.

Do you need the Eldar Codex to use it?

I think a lot of what you say in there is true about all codexes. While they have some that are actually unbalanced, for the most part the "Codex creep" is actually just a learning curve for the new book. People who own that army are going to have an advantage at first because they are going to be thinking about it and how to get the best out it.

Other players have other armies to worry about and won't see the Achilles heel(s) at first but will cue in on them after some time.

From your review it seems that this Codex makes the Eldar hard hitting, fast and fragile, which is exactly what they are supposed to be.

MongooseMatt24 Apr 2015 9:29 a.m. PST

No, this one replaces the Eldar Codex.

Cheers for the comments!

Garand24 Apr 2015 9:35 a.m. PST

I can't wait to spam Wraithguard with D-weapons…and lose the game anyway… :)

Damon.

Pictors Studio24 Apr 2015 10:12 a.m. PST

Does it replace the Iyanden Craftworld Codex as well?

15mm and 28mm Fanatik24 Apr 2015 11:44 a.m. PST

Thanks for the nice review. It looks like the original Codex Eldar and Codex Iyanden Craftworld are being replaced with this one.

Mithmee24 Apr 2015 11:58 a.m. PST

Too bad for the suckers who forked over that $100 USD+ for those two books and now have to fork over another $65 USD+ for this one.

Garand24 Apr 2015 12:57 p.m. PST

The book is $58 USD, not $65 USD

Damon.

Garand24 Apr 2015 1:01 p.m. PST

Also whether the Iyanden supplement is really obsolete or not depends entirely on the group you play with. I personally wouldn't have any issues with someone wanting to use it with the new Eldar codex.

Damon.

The book is $58 USD USD, not $65 USD USD…

That is retail you need to add in the taxes.

Which means nearly $65 USD dollars where I live.

Pictors Studio24 Apr 2015 6:38 p.m. PST

But you also need to take off the FLGS discount, which means it is actually $55.33 USD. So actually $10 USD cheaper than what you are saying.

Did their speed get nurfed like some of Dark Eldars did?

Mithmee25 Apr 2015 12:56 p.m. PST

No because the FLGS does not do discounts anymore so yes it would be the $65 USD and quite frankly it not worth that much.

Would use my copy of White Dwarf 127 which is far better.

15mm and 28mm Fanatik25 Apr 2015 5:29 p.m. PST

Just picked it up at my FLGS for $46.40 USD, so it's not as bad as Mithmee says.

Pictors Studio25 Apr 2015 10:04 p.m. PST

You should move to where taxes aren't as high and you get a better discount. Or buy it from an online source, back down to $46.40 USD as 28mm Fanatik suggests.

Or don't you get the internet there?

Mithmee26 Apr 2015 7:26 a.m. PST

Even at that price it not worth it.

Most of it is just pictures of their overprice models.

The Fluff is just copied and pasted.

So you spend nearly $50 USD to get what 10-20 pages of something new.

As I said I have my copy of White Dwarf 127 which I paid less than $5. USD

But if you want to throw your money away go right ahead.

Bob Runnicles27 Apr 2015 10:18 a.m. PST

I'm actually somewhat floored that you apparently still buy White Dwarf to be honest lol :)

ImhotepMagi27 Apr 2015 7:11 p.m. PST

There are a couple little things I actually enjoyed seeing in the new rules, like 2 wound exarchs with built in powers, as opposed to options for powers nobody really took. It makes them really fit their fluff as heroes.

And I like that Dire Avengers exarchs can do a little tanking for challenges regardless of their armament, what with a 4+ invulnerable save.

I also like the datasheet system and the rules being altogether at the back, so you don't have to search the whole book for special rules. Now if only they can get their armoy points vales with their actual entries…

15mm and 28mm Fanatik27 Apr 2015 9:24 p.m. PST

This latest codex is also about a third more pages than its predecessor, at just over 150pp. Considering that they split out the Harlequins, they actually padded the material.

Who said anything about buying that piece of crap Advertisement.

The last White Dwarf I brought was the one that had the free mini's which was over a decade ago.

Kept the mini's and threw the White Dwarf into the recycle bin.

Plus White Dwarf 127 came out over 20 years ago.

Mithmee28 Apr 2015 12:22 p.m. PST

like 2 wound exarchs with built in powers

Thing is with being only Toughless 3 those two wounds mean nothing when hit with a Strength 6 weapon.

Mithmee28 Apr 2015 12:23 p.m. PST

Yes they did with pictures of their overpriced models.

I expected you to say something like that….

ImhotepMagi28 Apr 2015 4:24 p.m. PST

@Mithmee

It's a good thing most weapons aren't S6 then. When your opponent brings assault cannons, that's what "Look out, Sir!" rolls are for.

I realize it's your schtick to wander into the 40k section and tell everyone that that are having wrongfun, but maybe keep it to a single post per thread?

That only goes so far and Eldar die really quick because most weapons are Strength 4.

I expected you to say something like that….

Only because it is true.

Mithmee28 Apr 2015 5:18 p.m. PST

Thing is I have over ten armies for WFB and 40k.

Plus another five for 40K Epic.

So many years ago I got a lot of fun playing.

But that was before GW decided that screwing over their customers and price gouging them would be their prime business focus.

Now they are pushing $150 USD models just so that they can make a profit.

They are on 7th Edition 40K because 6th Edition tanked.

They are so screwing over WFB for the upcoming 9th Edition with their "End of Time" focus.

Which is why I jumped onto the Kings of War 2nd Edition Kickstarter shelling out $300 USD for quite a few models that if brought from GW would be around $1,000 USD if not more.

So yes I am a proud GW hater and will continue to hate them for their decisions and screwing over several great games.

15mm and 28mm Fanatik28 Apr 2015 5:28 p.m. PST

Well, someone has to take the mantle of "unapologetic GW basher" on TMP I suppose.

ImhotepMagi28 Apr 2015 5:35 p.m. PST

Believe it or not, I also hate GW. I share many of your views, though not all. I switched to KoW happily and enjoy it way more than Warhammer. I have no intention of ever buying another White Dwarf. I'm slowly phasing out their paints in my supplies.

My one vice, however, is 40k. I love the setting, the game (I actually think the new edition is an improvement) and the miniatures. I hate that I have to deal with GW to get the game and buy the barest minimum to get my fix.

I'm not saying you can't hate GW. I'm just saying maybe about a quarter of a thread's worth of hate posts might be overkill.

And as to Eldar dying to S4, cover and mobility are your friends. My point was, the extra wound is essentially free and fluffy, and may occasionally save the exarch on the odd chance he's not staring down a power fist. Powerful? No. Kinda neat? Yeah.

Edit: Bad thread math.

alpha3six28 Apr 2015 11:21 p.m. PST

Mithmee, the Eldar are stronger now than they've ever been in any edition (even without the wraithknight and the new distortion weapon rules). I guess you will never be satisfied even if they brought back lasgun Guardians and added 24" assault 6 shuriken catapults with Shred on top of Bladestorm.

Bob Runnicles29 Apr 2015 7:18 a.m. PST

"Plus White Dwarf 127 came out over 20 years ago."

Misread the issue number, my bad. I started WD with issue 18, fwiw. Obviously a very different magazine now!

chromedog05 May 2015 5:16 a.m. PST

127 was almost 25 years ago, by my reckoning. It WAS 1990.

Mithmee05 May 2015 12:31 p.m. PST

Yup July of 1990 back when White Dwarf was worth while to buy.
