Happy St George's Day …

I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot!
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry, "God for Harry! England and Saint George!

The Society of Ancients will be at Salute on Saturday celebrating Harry's victorious 1415 campaign with a sumptuous Agincourt game and a participation game Greyhounds in the Slips based on Shakespeare's depiction of the assault on the breach at Harfleur …

The gane's afoot – or possibly 30cms?

Lt Col Pedant23 Apr 2015 5:36 a.m. PST

Sorry Ugly …But 'afoot' is quite a different word from 'foot'

Never heard of a pun, Billy?

Those are some nice looking figures. Are they Papo? Oh, and good luck with the game!

Yesthatphil23 Apr 2015 7:07 a.m. PST

Mostly Revell and some Schleich figures (whatever I could get hold of in sales bins … ) .. but they may appear under other brands.

Around 90mm high. Prepainted although I have felt the need to make some adaptations …

I believe the big Agincourt game will use Hinton Hunts …

I'm English, proud to be so, but I detest St. Georges Day. It always seems to get hijacked by someone proclaiming his English rights; and it's usually a white racist cloaking his foul beliefs under the flag of St. George.

Way to spoil the thread, there. frown Or perhaps you're actually French?wink

Looks like a great game, Phil. Happy St. George's Day to our English brethren.

War Panda23 Apr 2015 11:36 a.m. PST

I'm Irish and growing up as a kid there was a lot of activities and traditions that went along with celebrating St Pats Day. I was wondering what are the traditions or customs associated with the celebration of St George's Day…. or would it depend where in England you live

Anyway I sincerely wish my English brothers a very Happy St Georges Day!

Gone Fishing23 Apr 2015 11:48 a.m. PST

Likewise!

(Yikes, olicana. Are you being serious?)

Yesthatphil23 Apr 2015 11:59 a.m. PST

@ olicana … sorry if you have it spoilt for you up Ilkley way (I had hoped those of us who mark the day with good intentions had reclaimed it from that minority of idiots. Round these parts there's not a whisper of extremism)

@ War Panda … almost uniquely, England does not have a Bank Holiday for its patron saint (so we can't indulge the fetes and carnivals that would otherwise adorn it) … so mostly we fly the flag, quote Shakespeare, and toast our good fortune with a foamy glass of warm beer grin.

Thanks for your good wishes everyone. To those of you able to get to Salute, enjoy the big show and drop by if you can …

Then there are those who say that St George isn't much of a patron saint anyway since as far as we know he never walked this green and pleasant land and that Alban would make a far better patron saint for England. At least he lived here …

Yesthatphil23 Apr 2015 3:14 p.m. PST

Or St Edmund (a traditional alternative candidate who was also indigenous) …

George seems to have come to prominence in the very military 14th Century …

In the Wilton Diptych from the end of the century, Richard II, flanked by John the Baptist and the English saints Edmund and Edward the Confessor, is personally presented with 'England' in the form of a St George banner by Jesus.

Happy St George's Day to my fellow Englishmen and women and thanks to all those from the US and elsewhere who posted greetings!

Major B: Alban wasn't English either….! St Edmund would be a better candidate but I'm quite happy with a Christian Roman soldier who just might have been stationed at York at one time and who has inspired the English for generations.

I flew my flag!

English Thegn23 Apr 2015 11:30 p.m. PST

Well done!

Major B: Alban wasn't English either….!

I didn't say he was, but he did live and die here. The site of his death is probably the oldest known site of Christian worship in the country.

Green Tiger24 Apr 2015 5:40 a.m. PST

I'm English – they should make me a saint – I can turn wine into water (kind of) and I'll probably die a virgin (ish).

Oh Bugger24 Apr 2015 6:22 a.m. PST

The site of his death is probably the oldest known site of Christian worship in the country.

I'd say it was it gets a mention in Gildas.

Happy St George's from Scotland – looking forward to watching the Morris Dancing Finals on the BBC!
