I am planning on doing a 3rd century Sassanid army in either 10mm or 15mm.

Do any of you have any recommendations in these scales? Favorite figure lines?

First, what scale do others in your local group or club use? Second, which scale has the best looking figures, myself being a idiot I go for the larger scale myself 25/28mm. ensuring some of my grand-kids won't go to collage. Check Essex against Pendragen, don't think I spelled their right, you do have a lot of choices thou.

Don't forget these, from Strategia Nova, if you choose 15mm. link Good match for Essex in terms of size and heft.

Apparently by the same sculptor as for Baueda (who doesn't make Sassanians; link ) For Strategia Nova, I had to order direct from Italy, but it worked out OK when I did it.

The best Sassanids are:

In 10mm the best are the Pendraken Late Romans. I would use the Cataphracts, Clibanarii, Clibanarii with bow, unarmored milita, and the foot & horse archers as Sassanids.

In 15mm the best are Battle Honours Sassanids, especially the clibanarii with bow and the command group. I am not too fond of the cavalry with cast on lances. The metal tends to be soft and they are difficult to remove (and replace with wire lances).

In 28mm the best are the new Aventines, perhaps supplemented by A&A (same designer).

Thanks for the suggestions. I am leaning towards the smaller scales since I have to also paint up a Roman opponent.

What are the options in 25/28mm besides Aventine and A&A? Are there any US sellers for these two?

HANS GRUBER22 Apr 2015 8:43 a.m. PST

Aventine & A&A do not have US distributors. Aventine provides excellent service. Delivery is often within a week to the US. The last time I ordered fro A&A their service was also very good.

Other options for 25/28 are Gripping Beast and Essex.

Legio Heroica has released a range of 18mm Sassanids. Looking at the pictures I am a bit underwhelmed. On the other hand they are a new range, and there are many fans of their miniatures.

oldbob:

I guess I will be joining you in poverty. I just picked up a bunch of Romans in 25mm for a deal that I could not refuse, so now I will have to sell the house to by some Sassanids!

What rules will you be using,Impetus lets you start small with their basic rules and work your way up to very large battles. So your initial cost shouldn't be to bad.

This was the very question I was planning on posting on TMP.

I like rule sets that incorporate cohorts etc. Does Impetus do this? What figure scale are the units?

You start with 8 bases in basic impetus, how many figures per base is really up to you. Go to their website, the basic rules are free. They also have videos on every section of the game. It's worth a look.
