Hello all, I just finished reading David Howarth's superb book on Waterloo, A Near Run Thing. Brilliant! I was reading reviews of that very book over on Amazon UK, whilst jotting down my own thoughts, when I came upon someone who'd posted this link in their review: Near Run Thing – film (kickstarter) I won't go into it here. If you want to see what the people planning the mooted movie intend to do, use the above link. It looks like they're in danger of failing to raise their target in time. But it'd be great to see the project succeed, however long it might take them to raise the funds they need. More films about Waterloo? Yes please! I'll be posting a more in depth review of Howarth's fine book on my blog at some point. But my short one on Amazon UK is here, for anyone interested: A Near Run Thing – David Howarth Let me know if you read my review, or if you've read Howarth's book, what you think. And if you're a wealthy tycoon with money to spare, and you fancy backing the Near Run Thing movie… Best, Sebastian |

Howarth's book was one of the first I ever read on the subject of Waterloo – probably about 40 years back – brilliant weaving of personal accounts into the narrative of the battle. He also wrote a similar work about Trafalgar – I have that in a boxed edition with the Waterloo book, in addition to my original, well thumbed, paperback from the 70's. |

Looks like the plug's been pulled on the Kickstarter. |

Canceled by the owner. Maybe they raised the funds by other means? |

Yeah, re the kickstarter being cancelled… I hope the project still goes ahead. I had problems posting the subject: I was trying to post it in the morning before going to work, but kept getting these 'error – lock out' messages. What are they all about? I get them quite often on TMP. So I only got to finally post the above after I'd got back from work, 12 hours later (a long day!). Immediately after posting I thought 'I'll check the links are working', and when I clicked thought to the kickstarter page, I saw that it had been cancelled by the OP, just one hour before! I had already emailed Jack (I think that's the producers name?) via his kickstarter page, and suggested he try posting on here. I've not heard back, and now he's pulled the plug. Who knows… perhaps he has a pathological aversion to wargamers? :o) |

@ ligniere: cool! On the strength of the Waterloo one I'm more than a little tempted to try some other Hibbert titles. I believe he's written books on the French Revolution, Napoleon and his ladies, and Wellington, as well as one about Nelson (is the one you refer to under Trafalgar?). It's the anniversary of Agincourt as well as Waterloo this year, and amongst the many books Hibbert's written, on a vast array of mostly biographical and historical subjects, there's even one on that! So many interesting books, so little time… |

mmm… looks like I'm drifting towards a conversation with myself here, but never mind anyway: I'm mixing up Howarth and Hibbert in my book memory banks! |

Sebastian Palmer, never be concerned about a conversation with yourself. If asked why you talk to yourself, reply 'I needed expert advice'. I was wondering about the transition to Hibbert. Agree, so many books, so little time. When painting, I am torn because I could be reading. When reading, I am torn because I could be painting. I need audio books so I can do both simultaneously. :-) |

Have both those Howarth books, since I was a young lad…Hibbert is excellent too, have a few of his. Borodino is my favourite. |
