Of course! It's not a "fashion statement", it is one of practicality. Gloves and/or gauntlets makes it easier to retain a grip on the reins, handle heavy wooden chests, trails, move fallen branches, etc. without injuring the hands.

Yes, it is 'correct' but… in actual practice, no. Gloves wear out fast in the service and getting replacements was often an issue.

If the picture is of a driver at the Battle of the Wilderness then that might be OK. Remember, they were a week into the campaign. Stuff wore out pretty quickly, however.
