The Islamic State group on Saturday released a video that shows militants smashing artefacts at the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud in northern Iraq before blowing up the site.

The undated video suggests that the site, on the Tigris river about 30 kilometres (18 miles) southeast of Mosul, was completely levelled.

Destruction at the site was reported more than a month ago but the extent of the damage was unclear at the time…

Why is this crossposted to Ancients? I should think it is purely UM stuff?

sumerandakkad12 Apr 2015 5:30 a.m. PST

CK-Nimrud is an ancient site and has great historical interest for those who wargame the biblical era.

RavenscraftCybernetics12 Apr 2015 5:40 a.m. PST

it was an ancient site :(
what do you expect from the same sort of Bleeped texts who burned the library at Alexandria?

Rod I Robertson12 Apr 2015 5:44 a.m. PST

Sigh. Such a waste! Iconoclastic idiots with explosives can really get me angry sometimes. I say all ancient gamers should build terrain to thwart ISIS in their attempts to expunge the past.

I totally agree Rod … These lunatics need to be eliminated for so many reasons.

Barbarians all. Time for a Crusade.

So what would a modern multi-national crusading expeditionary force look like?
Who would be the kings….err, leaders?

What would a 'Ultra-Modern Outremere' look like.

I understand if I get dawghoused but we are barraged by Daesch/ISIS crappola everyday in the news. I feel the need to counter it.

If the Pope can go after Turkey for Amenian Genocide, can't we express anti-ISIs what-ifs?

Just a thought.

What would a 'Ultra-Modern Outremere' look like.

I've often wondered what an Outdoor Mother would look like, too.

Great War Ace12 Apr 2015 9:38 a.m. PST

Barbarians all. Time for a Crusade.

They want you to say that. It proves that they are right….

WillieB12 Apr 2015 10:29 a.m. PST

Then simply remind them that 250+ years earlier 'they' were rampaging through France and Switzerland…

The Arabs and Persians have to purge Daesh. Otherwise even more of the jihadi radicalized fundamentalist islamic lunatic fringe and even some fence sitters will see this as a 21st Century Crusade. That is just what Daesh wants. Plus it wouldn't be the first time over past few decades that the West tried to bring "peace" to the region, etc. … So IMO GWIII is out. It has to be a moslem [un]civil war. With the West's support kept to the very minimum.

Cacique Caribe12 Apr 2015 1:20 p.m. PST

OMG. More cuneiform texts and original artwork gone!!

It survived 2500 years only to be destroyed by a bunch of useless fanatics who (call me Dr. Evil if you like) should be exterminated once and for all (after an appropriate amount of time for "intense" interrogation). But I f we're too soft to do it ourselves (US), just pass them on to the Jordanians, as long as we have our very own "fly on the wall".

Dan
PS. In truth, for once in my life I hope the U.S. doesn't know about such activities, or the powers that be would put a swift stop to it, no matter how much vital info we were getting, and then quickly apologize to the whole world for being such a barbaric nation. Perhaps the UK might have the intelligence personnel and leaders with "the right stuff"!

skippy000112 Apr 2015 1:24 p.m. PST

I prove once again French is too civilised a language for the non-French. My battlecry will be Deus Omelette du Fromage!!!!"

Rebelyell200612 Apr 2015 6:57 p.m. PST

Barbarians all. Time for a Crusade.

Nope. What is needed is a UN-lead coalition consisting primarily of Pakistani, Indonesian, and Arab League peacekeepers with relaxed rules of engagement. ISIS wants a religious war, but that does not mean they deserve one.

Charlie 1212 Apr 2015 8:29 p.m. PST

Legion 4 and Rebelyell2006 are right. This is a 'family' affair among the Arab community. Any Western involvement would backfire (and then some). I absolutely hate the loss of life, the destruction of antiquities and the whole BS that Daesh represents. But a knee jerk reaction by the West is exactly what those bastards want…

goragrad12 Apr 2015 10:34 p.m. PST

Of course ISIS wants an 'overreaction.'

However waiting to respond until they reach Tours or Vienna would be more of an 'underreaction…'

As to a coalition against ISIS with Pakistan involved, at last reading their intelligence service is still pretty cozy with the Taliban. Not sure they ultimately disagree with ISIS's goals.

Rebelyell200613 Apr 2015 4:24 a.m. PST

That all depends if Shia Pakistan is willing to be on the same sids with Sunni ISIS. It seems a bit unlikely since ISIS has been destroying as many historic sites as they csn find, including Shia sites.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP13 Apr 2015 7:05 a.m. PST

The Paks said they'd help the Saudis[who are Sunni] with their battle in Yemen … So there is that. But many of the Taliban are a Pak creation. And yet some of the Taliban are at war with the Paks. Like the school massacre a few months back. I realize like in a A'stan tribal/warlord affilations, etc., pretty much trumps everything else, generally in much of the region. And Daesh[Sunni] wants to kill everybody who isn't them. It appears some of the Taliban and some A'stan locals will/are sideing with Daesh. And both Iran and the Paks are Shia'. The Persians support the Houthis fight with the Yemen governmental forces and their Saudis allies. Plus the Saudi coalition has many of the local smaller Arab states in that coalition. While the Persians support the Iraqis [60% Shia'] against Daesh. Then there is Syria's 3 way or more conflict. The Christians the support Assad. Because he won't execute them for not being moslem. The Turks are fighting the Kurds who are fighting Daesh. And the Turks would like to see Assad gone. So they in "defacto" support Daesh. And both are Sunni. AQ is running around all thru the region. Confused yet !? How could you "realistically" take sides if you even wanted to ? huh? Move across a border and affilations could and do change.

darthfozzywig13 Apr 2015 3:31 p.m. PST

Israelis were building the wrong wall. It should surround the rest of the region for a giant Sunni-Shia cage match. Enter the jihadi octagon!

Cacique Caribe13 Apr 2015 9:03 p.m. PST

"SIS wants a religious war, but that does not mean they deserve one."

They behead (with knives!) men, women and children of Christians, Muslim Syrians and non-Syrians, non-Muslim Kurds, and fellow Syrians of any other belief systems …

If all we do is make them "think lead" once or twice, I call it a humane improvement over what they do. Plus, it is not just to save Christians, or to forc-convert anyone, so no Crusade there!

If they're that put out by statues, let's just round up all the tacky concrete lawn art from every garden store in America, load it on C130s and carpet bomb the Iraqi countryside with the things. They'll be so busy smashing garden gnomes, they won't have time to do anything else.

EJNashIII15 Apr 2015 5:11 p.m. PST

Finally, something we can game. Gnome war middle east! Somebody call Brigade games.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP16 Apr 2015 8:50 a.m. PST

That may be a good solution as any Parzival ! thumbs up

Cacique Caribe16 Apr 2015 9:46 a.m. PST

Glory be to the almighty Gnome Bomb and the "ecofriendly" fallout!

If they were still in production, I would fight ISIS with ISIS dolls:

picture

We should drop the dolls, carpet-bomb the whole desert if it was up to me, but be ready for our own people to give us the endless social media fallout.

But can you imagine how they would feel if they thought that the whole world believed they were named after a "half-naked" plastic doll of a foreign pagan goddess! That would be priceless.

yeah, it'd be a worthy slam to them, but what did the ancient Egyptian goddess do to deserve getting associated with the DAESHbags?

Cacique Caribe17 Apr 2015 6:59 a.m. PST

I think she would be laughing it up!

I wanted to say "bomb those idiots into the stone age" but that would actually mean bombing them FORWARD in time.

Maxshadow20 Apr 2015 3:09 a.m. PST

Ha ha Dan worth a try!
Very funny Petrov "Bomb them forward into the stone age!" Should be the cry!
