I was researching how to make small scale bocage hedrerows when I came across this fellow's gallery on Photobucket. Im 99% sure I found the link in a discussion on these boards, but I'll be damned if I can't find it again. link I specifically want to know what I can use to replicate this (hay?) field – it looks like something you can toss onto a regular game mat. Is this something I can wander down to JoAnn's Fabric and find? [URL=http://s793.photobucket.com/user/Jurgen_Keuppe/media/6mm%20Layout/IMG_1471_zps82b9d472.jpg.html]

Looks to me like it is probably short, teddy bear fur. |

That fields is from a German model RR manufacturer, possibly Noch or Faller -- unfortunately I can't remember exactly. Defer to Jurgen, but I believe the product name was "corn field mat" or something similar. |

Google up teddy bear fur….. a lot of people use it. (although it may not be quite a nice as the large field shown) |

Kealios, check out Battlefield Terrain Concepts. Doug makes a number of field types suitable for 15mm and 28/40mm, along with roads, water pieces, trees and structures of various sorts. Website: battlefieldterrain.com |

link It's a cornfield mat. In the US, we call it a wheat field. I got it from Amazon.UK. You can find them in most railroad shops. |

That aside, I'd say Jurgen has his act together--nice layout! |

I've purchased rolls like the one shown in Ben Lacy's post as well as flat sheets (9" x 12" I think) at different RR shops. You can get them in a few different colors. |

I've bought several of the flat sheets at the local model RR shop. They work fine for smaller fields (which suits me fine, since I mostly do 10mm); you'd need a roll to get the large field in Jurgen's picture. The edges don't always lay very flat since the backing is paper and not fabric, so it's best to disguise them with hedges, walls or fences. Fortunately the paper backing makes them very easy to cut to the size of whatever hedges or walls you have available.

Awesome, thanks all. I'll be heading to the Railroad shop this afternoon :) |

I've seen wheat fields listed as "corn" fields in the history books as well. Not sure how they get that description, unless they've never seen "corn" grow, since the two couldn't look more different from one another. |

Long before maize (corn) was discovered by Europeans in the Americas, the use of the word 'corn' to mean a variety of grains was in use. Fabric shops should have useful items but you might have to hunt about, most of what I've seen recently has been too long for my use – I work only in 15 mm. But I keep looking. While I am a model railroader, the prices you'll pay for this stuff in hobby shop will be a lot higher than an equivalent amount of table coverage at a fabric shop. A Lot Higher, LOT HIGHER! |

Another item I use for fields are ribbed doormats. Almost any department type store sells something similar. Just paint the portions between the ribs an earthy color and you can highlight or even add colored plant material (RR shop again) the raised ribbed area. Here is a sample but they come from many companies and in many styles: link |

I've seen people take a beard trimmer to that Teddy Bear Fur and cut roads into it. Its a great effect. |
bobspruster | 12 Apr 2015 2:46 p.m. PST |
I used some yellowish spraypaint on a piece of cocoa mat (?) and it turned out looking nice pretty quickly, but is a bit too thick for 15s or smaller, I think. Bob |

Yes, the prices of that when sold to RR hobbyists is shocking! |

I found something at Faller, link but nothing at Noch. I havent made it to the local RR shop yet, but I plan on it soon…and price is ok since I'm buying this for looks and not "effects" at this point. I just want my battlefield to look good :P |
