I think much of the Union Artillery was excellent and many of the troops were good..if poorly led..trained too harsh

Off the top of my head I am trying to recall if ANY regiment in Gilsa's and Ames' brigades had EVER won a tactical engagement prior to July 1, 1863. I can't seem to remember if they ever had enjoyed any tactical success in any prior battle.

On the other hand, it is safe to assert that Gordon's and Hays' Confederate brigades were among the best in the Army of Northern Virginia.

In Ames bde. the 25th and 75th OVI fought well at McDowell, also fought well at Cedar Mtn., and Cross Keys

It looks like the 107th OVI saw its first action at Chancellorsville.

Thanks, BW1959. Thus, very few of the units (two) in the Federal division in question had had any significant prior combat success. Regards,
