A groundbreaking book that is still an important resource. I used it while doing research for a Civil War wayside exhibit on Indian participants for the State of Missouri. It's very readable. This volume was preceded by another, The American Indian as Slaveholder and Secessionist, and takes up the story before the battle of Pea Ridge. The background of Indian involvement and the growing tensions between and within tribes is covered in the first book. I heartily recommend both.

CSA Brigadier General Stand Watie was a well known Cherokee hero.

William Warner,

both books are available at link above in a variety of formats. Alas, not the one below.

She also wrote "The American Indian and the End of the Confederacy 1863-1866."

SonofThor, Watie was also the last Confederate general to surrender. He was certainly a well known hero who was Cherokee but not a hero to all Cherokees, many of whom were strong Unionists. Like the United States, the Cherokee Nation was divided and fought a bitter civil war among its own tribesmen.

For those interested in Watie, there are several books:

Cunningham, Frank. "General Stand Watie's Confederate Indians."

Sullivan, Roy. "Scattered Graves: The Civil War Campaigns of Confederate Brigadier General and Confederate Indian Chief Stand Watie."

Knight, Wilfred. "Red Fox: Stand Watie and the Confederate Indian Nations during the Civil War Years in Indian Territory." [Reissued by two other publishers with different subtitles]

Franks, Kenny. "Stand Watie and the Agony of the Cherokee Nation."

Bartels, Carolyn. "Stand Watie and the First Cherokee Regiment, 1861-1865."

Schmid, Vernon. "Watie's Wolves: A Novel of the Civil War in Indian Territory."

For the North Carolina branch of the Cherokee and the hard luck regiment that was raised to fight for the Confederacy, see:

Gaines, W. Craig. "The Confederate Cherokees: John Drew's Regiment of Mounted Rifles, 1861-1865."

and

Crow, Vernon H. "Storm in the Mountains: Thomas' Confederate Legion of Cherokee Indians and Mountaineers."

Godbold, E. Stanley. "Confederate Colonel and Cherokee Chief: The Life of William Holland Thomas."

Osprey has released 2 books:

"The American Civil War in Indian Territory" by John Spencer

and

"Native American Mounted Rifleman, 1861-1865" by Mark Lardas

For those who hate staring at a computer screen, the trilogy by Abel on Confederate Indians is also available in paperback.

Does anyone have any information on how the Native American troops were dressed at Pea Ridge?

rorymac11 Apr 2015 9:27 p.m. PST

The John Drew book is actually about a regiment raised in Indian Territory for the Confederacy. Many of those enlisted in the regiment ended up going over to the Union after the initial fighting in Indian Territory. Good and interesting book.

rorymac,

Yeah, sorry about that. I noticed the mistake after it was too late to change it.

You are right though, it is a good book on a very obscure ACW topic and well worth the money.
