So me and my friend decided to game cold war period, I got my minis in yesterday.
I have to say, the GHQ cold war stuff has amazing detail.
I laid out a quick terrain table and put down some minis, and I have to say the scale feels perfect for armored engagements.

Setting ground scale aside, the 6mm scale of miniatures makes the battlefield look perfect, there is enough space for actual maneuver and not just deploy move into positions and fire. You can pretty much can have everything you wan on the table AND the kitchen sink too and it wont look like I am playing napoleonics with tanks parked roadwheel to roadwheel.

6mm is very very awesome ;)

you do get to play much closer to the actuql ground scale which is nice, and grabbing a few new tanks of some kind is not breaking the bank

What rules are you going to use?

Going to give FFoT3 a try. I really like the fact that they have taken a serious consideration in fire control and optics technology without making it complicated at all.

FFoT is great, and so is GHQ.

I'm thinking of even trying skirmish level gaming with GHQ. Using CM instead of inches when 15mm rules call for measuring in inches.

Petrov you live in FL by chance? We have a group that meets a few times throughout the year that games modern.

They do make wonderful looking vehicles, and other kit.

Paul, I am from NY so I guess I will be a regular at your club once I retire. I got my NY license plate and I drive like an idiot so I should fit right in :)

Where abouts in NY, south of buffalo here

Depew, looks like we are neighbors.

Dynaman – you could use the ranges as is, and they'll be pretty realistic but using cm instead lets you play on a mini table :)

GROSSMAN10 Apr 2015 3:15 p.m. PST

It's the only scale for modern war.

Mako1110 Apr 2015 3:53 p.m. PST

Well, excepting 1/144, 1/100th, 1/72nd, etc., but I get your point as far as the size of the minis to shooting ranges, and size of the battlefield on the tabletop.

6mm is a nice compromise, but of late, I've been coveting some larger minis for smaller, battles.

Dynaman878910 Apr 2015 4:28 p.m. PST

Weasel – I'm thinking of using Chain of Command where the ground scale pretty much matches 15mm exactly. So switching inch to CM is required – other rules sets might work just fine keeping inches though.

Petrov – Yup, we got plenty of idiots from NY and PA. Like we say here, NJ is noted for having the worst drivers in the world but they live in other states…

Besides myself we have another guy who has a very large 6mm collection of WWII – he has them based for Spearhead and is adding more to his collection for Modern Spearhead. Others in the group have a whole range of scales and time periods.

Playing something like the rumored "Battlegroup Fulda" (my suggested name for Piers' and Warwick's modern rules), 6mm is right about 1:1 figure scale to ground scale if you play rules as written in inches.

GHQ makes very nice models (I have a lot of their 1/2400 ships), but how soft are those gun barrels?

Weasel10 Apr 2015 8:11 p.m. PST

Dynaman – makes total sense yeah.

My wife is from Vermont and she insists that Massachusetts drivers are the worst in the nation :)

Have to agree with Lion (Except it would be better as Battle Group Hanover Plain, or Big fight in the Schooner pub, Paderborn!)

I have used the Battlegroup rules for 1:300, keeping ranges etc the same on a 12 x 6 table and it works well.

Just had some GHQ CI, soft barrels but not had any problems with snapping barrels!

Tally Ho!

Modern turrets are a but more tough.
Glue the turret on and I glue a rare earth magnet on the bottom and store the tank/apc on a metal sheet never a problem with a bent barrel.
