El Paso or Big Iron by Marty Robbins. I often do one or the other when Kareoke happens to me. |
Grelber | 10 Apr 2015 6:58 a.m. PST |
Another fan of Big Iron. Also like the Ballad of Utah Carol, another Marty Robbins song. Somebody should make a one package set of figures for Big Iron or El Paso. Grelber |

"Ghost Riders" is my fav, also. My 2nd is "Pancho & Lefty"; Imo its story would make a fine Western film plot with a ready-made theme song. 3rd: "Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darling" from High Noon. |
Texas Jack | 10 Apr 2015 7:20 a.m. PST |
Oooh, so many choices. I can´t narrow it down any lower than two: Cowboy´s Lament El Paso Ghost Riders in the Sky Ok, make that three. I should stop now before I add more. |
WarWizard | 10 Apr 2015 7:30 a.m. PST |
I have always like songs or ballads, something that told a story. So two of my all time favorites are: 1. El Paso – Marty Robbins 2. True Grit – Glenn Campbell YouTube link |

Gone Fishing | 10 Apr 2015 8:23 a.m. PST |
DerKrampus, you have a great list. Cross the Brazos at Waco by Walker is one of the all time greats; if the rest of you haven't heard it, you might give it a listen. Many of the best have already been listed, but here are a few more: The Prisoner's Song by Vernon Dalhart is an oldie but goodie: YouTube link "Do Not Forsake Me O My Darlin" by Tex Ritter is also extremely atmospheric. YouTube link by Eddy Arnold has some unsurpassed cowboy crooning.

Good choices, Ravenscraft. I'll put up: Me 'n' My Uncle – anybody's version Doc Holliday – Hank Williams Jr. Ballad of Ned Kelly – Fotheringay (Yeah I know. It's an Ozzie song recorded by a Pommy band. Sandy Denny is in the chorus.) |

Not sure about the plural of "Dogy" used here, but this is MY favourite: Out on the plains, down near Santa Fe I met a cowboy riding the range one day And as he jogged along, I heard him singing A most peculiar cowboy song It was a ditty he learned in the city Ah, comma ti, ii, yi, aay, comma ti, yipply, yi, aay Get along, get hip, little doggies Get along, better be on your way Get along, get hip, little doggies And he trucked 'em on down the old fairway Singing his cow, cow boogie in the strangest way Comma ti, ii, yi, aay, comma ti, yipply, ii, aay Singing his cowboy songs, he's just too much He's got a knocked out western accent With a Harlem touch, he was raised on loco weed He's what you call a swing half-breed Singing his cow, cow boogie in the strangest way Comma ti, ii, yi, aay, comma ti, yipply, ii, aay Get along, little doggie Better be on your way, your way G-get along, little doggie And he trucked 'em on down the old fairway Singing his cow, cow boogie in the strangest way Comma ti ii-yi aay, comma ti yipply ii aay Yip yip, singing his cowboy songs Yip yip as he was juggling along Yip yip, he sings with a Harlem touch Yip yip, that cat is just too much Singing his cow, cow boogie, in the strangest way Comma ti, ii, ii, ii, ii, aay Read more at link

Too many choices! Red Headed Stranger is probably top on the list, though. Beyond that, I really like: Big Iron Ghost Riders in the Sky San Antonio Rose Pancho & Lefty Seven Spanish Angels Water Big Ball's in Cowtown My Heroes Have Always been Cowboys The Tennessee Stud A Horse He Called Music Let's be honest, pretty much everything by Bob Wills or the Sons of the Pioneers would be on my list, if there was room . . . |

Blaze of Glory by Jon Bon Jovi? I'll get me coat. Don't. The Blaze of Glory album is actually very good, and very western. "Santa Fe" easily rivals any more traditional song. Big Iron is my favorite Marty Robbins song, though I like most of his songs. Plant Texas, Kenny Rogers, also generates a thrill every time. |
