Hey there! So this is my first post here, and I wanted to get some ideas from you dudes. I recently picked up a considerable chunk of 6mm dwarves and goblins, which have been a blast to paint (my eyes hurt, thanks for asking). Now I just need a ruleset that will work with them.

My criteria:

- doesn't need heavy customization
- needs to play fast
- needs to be well written
- fantasy or able to translate to fantasy setting
- can be played 6mm or 10mm
- MUST have at least some quick start rules for free.

Game systems I've tried already:

- Kings of War (love it, still waiting on 2nd edition to be finalized)
- DBM (not a fan)
- Warhammer (I loved 6th edition. does that count?)
- Mayhem (still on the fence with this one. I do have a crush on Mr Brent though)

Systems I've not tried:
- HOTT (if it's like DBM…. nah)
- Empires d6,d8,d13,etc
- Wizard Battles
- basically anything on WargameVault that doesn't have some sort of free quick start.

I've based everything so far on either 40x40, 40x20 or 20x20 if that helps. Thanks!

I meant to add that I've looked over Warmaster, but it seems to suffer from the same horrid layout that Warhammer does imo.

warmaster?

Maddaz11109 Apr 2015 5:20 p.m. PST

or maybe not…

Yeah, that's what I said. There is a LOT of material to digest. I haven't actually played it, as I'm a bit daunted.

HOTT is more DBA than DBM if that helps.

OH? I actually didn't know there was a difference. I just don't own it simply because I can find a demo of it anywhere.

They're not free unfortunately, but we've just released Warband: link

Easy to learn, fast to play, loads of fun…!

Warmaster is a great game. If had little in common with Warhammer other than the setting. You should give it another look, you are missing out.

I'd second what Ivan DBA said. Warmaster is a fantastic game. Simple to learn and easy to play.

PatrickWR09 Apr 2015 7:20 p.m. PST

Yes, Warmaster is a great game with loads of content available on the web.

Pendraken makes beautiful models. But like the models, I'm not buying a ruleset until I know what it looks like. I've wasted too much money on bad games to ever buy before I try again.

I have a friend nearby who is an expert at Warmaster. I think I'll go that route with it. Thanks all!

I have a free 10mm set on my blog, they are a playtest version and really simple but they work and you can get a game out of them, if you fancy a look they are here…

Just click on "the rules wot I wrote" in the menu bar and they are there.

Hope this is of use,

Cheers Roger.

I'll add my vote to that for Warmaster.

Warmaster is very good but if it will not appeal you could try using your figures with command and colours perhaps?
A game system called legions or legio looked good, not sure as just briefly passed it at a show.

I believe Basic Impetus is still free, as is the unofficial fantasy add-on for it.

My Sword & Spear rules meet all of your requirements except the one about a free version, but the pdf is only £6.00 GBP I can't post links at the moment but if you search on here or on google you can find loads of reviews and links to my website and forum.

You have Mayhem by Brent Spivey, you said…it really is a sweet ruleset. If you have only looked it over and not played it, I urge you to throw some dice in anger with it. It plays really well.
