Now that we have Barbarossa and Rising Sun for Flames of War, I am planning on getting a whole passel of T-28s, T-26s, BT-5s and BT-7s etc from Gaming Models.

What markings would they have in this stage of the War?
Would they have patriotic slogans? Red stars?

There was a system of solid and broken stripes around the turret used to denote subunits in some formations, but as lasalle says, frequently nothing at all early war.

This is an interesting site: wio.ru/. On the left is English text, go down to "Tanks in WW2" and then "Soviet Armour, Wartime Colour Photos". Apart from specifications there are also lots of picture. Various pictures show a number.

According to Zaloga's Squadron book on the Eastern Front, in the early period most Soviet tanks had minimal markings. Air recognition symbols, usually a band across the turret roof, or a triangle or square in the same position could be used. Sometimes there could be numbers, often single digits, on the sides, or the stripes around the turret mentioned above.

If I recall correctly, Zaloga mentions that the system of markings is not very well understood due to the chaotic nature of the Soviet archives.

Early war such individuality as seen later on wasn't tolerated in Russia. Doing so would likely get you a tenner in a re-education camp.
