Korea in the 19th Century was the Hermit Kingdom, turning away foreigners.

In 1866, an American expedition went upriver to negotiate a trade agreement, but the ship ran aground. The Koreans used fire rafts to burn the ship, then fought the crew as they attempted to land.

In 1872, another US expedition went upriver. When a Korean river fort opened fire, the Americans demanded an apology. When no apology was offered, a landing party attacked and seized three of the forts.

On a scale of 0 (no interest) to 10 (obsession), what is your level of interest in gaming US colonial battles in Korea?

8 if someone else paints the figures and runs the game.

I am with Winston on this

7.

I've got the American ships in 1/600, just need the forts and a few more junks.

Have to agree with Winston. Would be lots of fun but I can't justify another period for one little skirmish.

About ten years ago I was corresponding with the chap who hosted the Shinmiyangyo site as I was looking for info to game the 1871 (not 1872 as mentioned above) conflict. He was in the process of writing a book, but I have not seen any release since then.

His site: shinmiyangyo.org

In 15mm Federal troops in Civil War uniform will work fine for Marines. The Koreans were fairly primitive for the time so using figures armed with mostly melee weapons would work. Mix in the occasional jingal and antique cannon and that should take care of your Korean force.

As for ships, here is the list:

USS Colorado: (2) 10-inch, (28) 9-inch, (14) 8-inch guns
USS Alaska: (1) 60-pdr., (1) 11-inch, (10) 9-inch guns
USS Benicia: (1) 60-pdr., (1) 11-inch, (10) 9-inch guns
USS Monocacy: (2) 60-pdr., (4) 8-inch guns
USS Palos: (4) 24-pdr. howitzers, (2) 24-pdr. rifled howitzers

A seven or so. I actually thought about doing this as a skirmish in 28mm, but the Korean troops seemed, at the time, too difficult to convert. Koreans from this era or from the early c20 on the period of the Japanese takeover would be great.

Back in 1981 we, provided a short scenario article for the American-Korean encounter mentioned here. We did both a skirmish OB which worked best and a TSATF style OB. We tried an OB at 1:15 for Indunasa! Colonels! Emirs! but the US force was not large enough to justify completing the work on it.
Most players back then used ACW naval castings for the Americans and Boxers for the Koreans. The good ole days when we gamers had to compromise with castings.

Rudy – I am certain that if you still have any of the scenario info many of us would like to see it. If you do have it, and it is in electronic format, please email me what you have. preds81 at yahoo.com

I'd play if someone put it on but I don't do colonials otherwise.

This is exactly the kind of game I would sign up for at a convention. I'm not about to start a new period myself, however. So I'll say about"7" on the interest scale.
