Can somebody explain to me how a 150 mm SP fits into a platoon skirmish game . I just don't get this or am I wrong about the game level here.

We play on a big table.

You could use it as a scenario objective. Say, a bunch of Soviet partisans stage a daring assault on a position where an artillery unit has camped for the night. Partisans try to get in close enough to the SP guns and ammo carriers to lob in some explosives, while alarmed Germans artillerists crawl from their tents to fend the attackers away with their rifles.

Or maybe a small group of paratroopers that have just landed in Normandy or Low Countries have found themselves close to an artillery position. Their leader decides to launch an aggressive hit-and-run attack in an effort to damage the battery and keep the Germans off-balance.

Yeah, large table and a long minimum range.

I read an account of a US M12 (Sherman hull, 150mm howitzer mounted) that was used in direct fire for bunker busting in an attack on the West Wall. That'd be a good reason to have one. Also, I've been toying with the idea of putting offboard committed artillery on a stand beside the table with firing/displacing markers and the option to counterbattery or attract enemy fighters.

Well yes actually , A Hummel is a divisional asset and Bolt Action is as far as I know a Platoon level game. I don't see where this fits in. Even if you have a huge table the range that the gun fires at will not be confined by the table and its not the kind of weapon that you would see in an ad hoc battlegroup. I take your point that it could be used as an objective marker only I can think of many more cost effective objectives markers than a £20.00 GBP model.

Sorry always get caught between having a view and not being able to express it as in the trade and not done to say anything controversial. I should just resist and stay quiet.

I think I am getting to old and grumpy and people should do what they like but I feel uneasy when truth is distorted for the sake of a "good game" . When historical context loses all its currency then what you are left with is just another fantasy game.
