Last night we gave Caesar's Blenheim scenario another go, but with all troops downgraded one level in quality to speed it up a bit. It worked OK, and gave a fun deadly game. link |

That played out nicely and nice to se that a game of that size game played OK in a single session. |

"nice to se that a game of that size game played OK in a single session." Well, we'd just started the third deck (although the second was very short – the reshuffle came up quite quickly) and we both had 10-12 points of morale left (from an original 33 or so). There's was probably at least an hours' play left in the game. But it was also obvious that the Allies weren't going to be able to pull off a victory without a lot of luck, so we conceded. So in Maurice terms we played about 75% of the game, but realistically we'd finished, yes :) |

Hmmmm from the setup, you are not allowing Tallard to make his main mistake of letting Marlborough over the stream before engaging. You appear to have also not factored in the fact that the stream was so filled with fascines (by the frontline allied troops as they advanced to it) etc that it ceased to be an obstacle to the allies (except Artillery, but certainly cavalry and infantry crossed it with no issues). And as a commander you plan was flawed, Blenheim Village is the key to your battle, if you take that the Franco/Bavarian line is both turned and has nowhere to go (retreatwise) because the Danube swings back in a recurve. In the real battle, Marlborough effectively took the flank by so covering the village the French were unable to intervene in the rest of the battle (Strategically much the same as losing it), which then meant you could pluck the centre. The Franco-Bavarian position was a bad one against a bold General, much like William IIIs at Landen/Neerwinden. |

So a C- for us then. We'll try harder next time :( (And my plan was awesome. Better than my usual plan in any wargame which is to see what the enemy does, react to it and hope to get lucky. It's amazing I wi any games at all really.) |
