Gundaminfo just uploaded this video on their Gunpla (Gundam Plastic in layman terms) factory. I must admit I never really thought just how both artistic and capital intensive plastic making can be. I know that we all like to talk about how it costs thousands of dollars for these molds, but seeing it in action is kind of awe inspiring.

Also they have the cutest forklifts ever!

Yes thats how its currently done and the Japanese are very good at it.
Unfortunately as 3D printing methods get better and cheaper most of that is going to go to the wall as it won`t be economic to do things that way in the future.

I think that 3D printing replacing plastic model kits is still a long way off and probably will never completely replace high volume manufacturing capabilities.
