As a few of you might have picked up, I've been trying to source a copy of GMT Games' War Gally at a reasonable price, to play with miniatures – infact I'm busy hexing my 15 x 6 table for it
I've been trying to get hold of it second hand because the price in the UK is ridiculous. I have just purchased the game from the German games company – UGG. It came in at £66.00 GBP GBP including postage. My question is why is it between £86.00 GBP GBP and £103.00 GBP GBP on Amazon. I saw it somewhere else in the UK for £73.00 GBP the other day, plus postage. It would have been slightly cheaper to get it on ebay shipped directly from the US at £58.00 GBP GBP including postage, but that always risks the parcel being stopped at the depot – not released until you pay the Post Office 20% UK Value Added Tax and a administration handling charge of £8.00 GBP GBP – which could add almost another £20.00 GBP GBP to make the game £78.00 GBP I know it is always best to shop around but, it astounds how much money can be saved by getting games from Germany – I've done it before and saved loads. Ho hum. |

hello You really have a great site and superb (and numerous!) figures… Thanks for the post but do you have the interet adress of UGG? Thanks, yours Robert |

Partly trade volumes I suspect (Germany is the big European market for boardgames, so probably has better scope for getting bulk discounts at the wholesale level) and partly exchange rate movements. |

The Euro has lost value against other currencies. In the past year it has dropped from £1.00 GBP = Euro 1.20 to £1.00 GBP = Euro 1.41 in early March. That explains most of the difference. link The Euro has lost 30% against the Dollar in the past 8 months. |

Of course that means longer term the price difference will erode again (since next time they're buying from GMT, the (dollar) price will be a lot higher in Euro terms), but currency fluctuations usually take a while to work their way through to price changes, meaning that at least for a while, countries with a weakening currency become cheaper. |

Rats. I wish I'd known you wanted a copy, as I noticed Friday that Miniatures Market has it on for $32 USD in their March Madness sale and would have let you know (it's out of stock now). I'm not sure if that would still have been a good deal with the shipping (and the potential post office larceny), though. Dumb question – since the rules are available as a free download, are you just looking to use the indicator counters? Doug |

Hi Doug, Yeh, I know about the 'living rules' on the GMT site. I not sure they include enough information to actually play though – I think you also need the play sheets to get full value – I'm not sure as I've just glanced through them enough to know they look interesting. Even so, I'd feel a bit of a thief playing the rules without having bought the game. I like GMT very much and have quite a few games by them. The company was very good to deal with regarding some off spin stuff I did for Commands and Colors for miniatures without hexes for Slingshot a few years back – none of the 'you publish that and we'll sue your backside to Kingdom Come' nonsense you might get from a certain well known high street games shop – they couldn't have been more generous. Regards, James |

War Galley has always been one of those games that seem to be beyond reach price wise. I bid on a copy on eBay a couple years ago and gave up when it hit $86. USD War in the Pacific is another….. $250 USD-$350? Yes I know, 9000+ counters but really…. Nice ships BTW! |

Yup – as noted above. I think they only had 2 left when I noticed it Friday. I passed on it, as the rules (I have the free download) looked a bit much for my tastes. Had I known it was going for such high prices … Doug |

Use the PDF and send GMT a $10 USD donation … |

Yup – as noted above. My bad. I stopped reading at $32 USD and went right to MM. :) |

I think you also need the play sheets to get full value Not to mention the ship counters, etc., because things are not done in triplicate – some info is only in some game components. It's a complete game in a box, but not everything you need to play the game is in the free PDF rules – as far as I can see – so doing the right thing looks like it's paid for me. Still, $32 USD – you lucky s! |
