Continuing my B-movie film festival, I have watched Jean-Claude Van Damme's Replicant. My presumption going in was that I wouldn't like this much. I haven't seen much of Van Damme, but I haven't been impressed. The IMDB rating is 5.3 – average.

As the movie starts (somewhere in the very near future), we learn there's a serial killer known as The Torch (played by Van Damme) – who kills single mothers and burns their bodies. There's also a tough cop, Jake (Michael Rooker), who the killer calls and taunts even though the cop has retired…

So National Security (not the FBI!) recruit the retired cop to hunt down The Torch, using their secret technology: They can grow an adult human being, if they can obtain a DNA sample. The "replicant" will theoretically have "genetic memory" from the original. And they can also increase the replicant's ESP potential. (Yes, science fantasy, I know…)

We get some scenes of the replicant being born, trained, and then let loose into the world with Jake as his keeper. The idea now is to trigger the replicant's memories, so he can lead them to The Torch. But will the replicant become a serial killer, too? Will he remember anything useful?

And, of course, what happens when The Torch (Van Damme) ultimately gets to fight the replicant (Van Damme)! grin

I have to say that this movie was surprisingly good. Everyone I watched it with enjoyed it. Van Damme pulls off the dual role well. Michael Rooker does well as the angry/exasperated cop who doesn't trust the replicant. Catherine Dent is lovely and genuine in a small role as Jake's love interest, a cop and single mother. Marnie Alton stands out playing a hooker. None of the actors does a bad job.

As you would expect, there is a lot of action, a lot of fighting. The Torch does some things worth of the R rating, though in my opinion it is clearly "movie violence." There is also a sub-plot involving the Red Light District – no nudity that I recall, but a "sexual situation" as they say…

Can you game this?

The problem with gaming this kind of action is that it is mostly one-on-one, and miniature gaming hasn't handled that kind of personal combat very well, particularly considering kicks and rolls and that sort of thing.

But if you added henchmen and wrote up some connecting scenarios, you could game this with something like the .45 Adventure game system, which has an abstract way for players to pick up clues during scenarios.

I liked this movie, and would rate it better than average! I think this kind of movie gets slighted in the ratings for not being overly violent or gory or sexual, but it was fun and had some suspense.
