I would like to get into the Age of Arthur. I got some advice on the Medieval boards on Saxons, but now I would like to know what Arthurians people like.

Thanks.

Curteys/1st Corps are fantastic.

What scale? I used to have 15mm figures before I sold them off and switched to 10mm. In 15mm, Old Glory are decent (I prefer their Irish, Picts and Saxons. Not a fan of their Roman-British). Outpost and Splintered Light also have nice ranges. All three manufacturers' figures were mixed on the same bases and they meshed well together. In 10mm, its Pendraken for Romano-British and a mix of Pendraken and Magister Militum for the Irish and Saxons. Hope this helps.

The original Gripping Beast range.

You can have them in plastic by buying Gripping Beast Thengs (armoured) and Saxon Warriors (unarmoured). You only have to swap their round shields for auxilia type ones that Gripping Beast also sells for 4.50 GBP 40 metal shields.
With those two plastic boxes you can have around 85 infantry.

Gripping Beast is my choice

ACW Gamer25 Mar 2015 3:08 p.m. PST

Sorry, I meant 28mm

I have a right mix of Musketeer, Artizan, Black Tree, West Wind, Gripping Beast, Crusader & Foundry.

Thunderbolt are lovely figures, but 25mm and more Malory inspired grin

Curteys, followed closely by Gripping Beast.

Blacksmith and Hawkwood. I have an unpainted box of Saxon Thegns from an uncompleted SAGA project. So, just turn them into Arthurians?

Do you have an problem attaching metal shields to plastic?

What transfers would I order for them?

Glengarry525 Mar 2015 11:54 p.m. PST

Blacksmith, both the Gripping Beast plastic Vikings and Saxons come dressed in chainmail. Perhaps you are thinking of the GB plastic Dark Ages Warrior set as they have no armour, not even helmets!

madmick26 Mar 2015 5:41 a.m. PST

Some of the Curteys miniatures Arthurians, more to come inc cavalry.
Tranfers and banners are by Little Bigmen Studios sized to fit the shields.

ACWGamer, I use cyanocrilate to glue metal and plastic and never have any problem.
For decals LBM or Veni, vidi, vinci as Cardinal Hawkwookd suggested.

Glengarry5, never spoke about vikings but the ones you say.

blacksmith26 Mar 2015 11:53 a.m. PST

@Cardinal Hawkwood, did you use Gripping Beast metal shields on those plastics?

Old Guy29 Mar 2015 4:51 a.m. PST

My own Romano-British are about 60/40 Footsore (Musketeer) and Gripping Beast, with the odd figure from elsewhere, especially the leaders.

These are a typical Milites unit, you may notice the odd Roman shield pattern in there, a hang over from the old days perhaps.

Gripping Beast, Curtney's, I do think my Saxon opponent has Foundry and Perry too hands down. Check out my earlier post about our Dux campaign or click: stevesfieldworks.blogspot.com

Mainly West Wind and Musketeer (now Footsore) for early Saxons. More West Wind, Musketeer, Artizan footsloggers and Arthurian cavalry from Gripping Beast provide the opposition.

WillieB26 Apr 2015 2:59 a.m. PST

Gripping Beast, Footsore(ex- Musketeer), Curtey's, New Line Design, Black Tree Designs all have very good Late Roman/Arthurian ranges, that are very compatible with each other.

'Newcomer' Saxon Miniatures is bringing out an Arthurian range that might even set a new benchmark.
They simply look superb and judging from the Viking and Anglo Saxon miniatures I already have the sculpting and detail is astounding.

Old Glory range is really good in this era, for both sides.
