I built a very simple latern archon model for my Pathfinder group and I've had some lovely experiences with pumice gel for basing:

Whenever I see floating steel balls I think of the movie Phantasm. The pumice gel looks good, I will have to try that.

You rock! Have had a painful time trying to "sand" over 100 20mm figures and nothing worse when the sand falls off, especially when time is no ones friend. Great post.
