Why are any of these "essential?"

Isn't it "what you play?"

The "essential" part, in my mind, is these are solid rules that make a good starting point for variantion. they are well thought out, usually easy to follow, nad give a good game.

I like to start from a framework I'm comfortable when I adapt, rather than try to do the whole cloth

Fistful of Tows (WWII and Modern platoon level in one set)

-Song of Blades and Heroes for Fantasy skirmish in Warhammer World and Generic Fantasy
-Warmaster, mostly Fantasy
-Flames of War with Tour of Duty Supplement, for Battles in Vietnam. occasionally feels a little to close to the present, but the mechanized air elements are pretty appealing
-FFG's Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader (Technically and RPG, but translates pretty well)
-Force on Force for Modern "pulp" gaming
