On the way to Moscow the Grande Armee used the existing bridges which were not destroyed. On the way back the bridge they headed for in Borisov was destroyed before they could take it. Hence the move north to Studianka where there was a ford

On the way home they forgot? The studianka crossing? Why? Could have saved thousands of lives greetings serge joe

They did not know about the ford at Studianka as there was no need for it on the way east. They did find it on the way west when cavalry reconnaissance discovered the ford but in winter it was not really useable but was a good basis for bridge-building.

The whole snag curiously was just then, on the retreat, there was a thaw. A frozen river you walk across. A Summer river you do the same but get your feet wet. A torrent of meltwater, with chunks of ice tearing towards you is more of an obstacle. But at least shallow enough to build some bridge……..always assuming your engineers/pontonniers are prepared to freeze to death to save your hide!

The famous crossing was at the ford.

I know this is a pretty small scale map, but , did the Grande Armee even really cross the Berezina going in?
