"A Myanmar government MiG-29 fighter plane on March 8 flew over a Chinese village in the border province of Yunnan and dropped a bomb on a house believed to be a safe haven for the Kokang rebels. No major casualty was announced by either the Chinese or the Burmese side.

Witnesses at the site reported that the MiG-29 fighter jet flew at low altitude over the Chinese village known as Mengding, causing pandemonium among the villagers watching the tense firefight on the other side of the border between Myanmar government forces and the Kokang rebels. A Chinese ground intelligence agent has been cited by official Chinese news media as saying that Myanmar attack helicopters also were involved in the fight against the rebels…"

What I find very interesting is the lack of the usual bellicose rhetoric from Beijing on the subject.

That makes me wonder if they are supportive of the attacks, since otherwise they'd be denouncing them vociferously.

Of course, I guess the counter argument is they are so embarrassed by the incidents, that they don't want to acknowledge them, as the article seems to indicate.

If the locals are not 'Han' Chinese, the Central Government doesn't give a Rmb. Pretty much the same situation as Tibet and the Asian 'Stans.

What happened with the Chinese Air Force?
They have not radar there?

I suspect the last time any Chinese leader paid attention to Yunnan was when Chiang Kai Shek was chased there by the Japanese during WWII.

These border villages are nothing more than rest stops for the organized smuggling going on in both directions. They also serve as R&R stops for rebel groups and criminal gangs that ply these trades for their financing. Neither China nor Myanmar care about collateral damage that may happen from military action in these areas.

They probably do.

But chances are either that Beijing supports Myanmar in their campaign or doesn't give a damn.

Personally, I suspect that Beijing supports Myanmar, since even if the villagers weren't Han, Beijing should be Bleeped texted about an act of war. Kinda like the agreement between Egypt and Israel on hot pursuit of insurgents on the Sinai, border violations are not an issue if it results in dead or captured insurgents.

As an aside; Why do news organisations insist on using 'ethnic' versions of an Asian country or city's name when writing in English?

'Myanmar' in English is Burma, so why not use that name? Ditto 'Beijing' (Peking) and 'Mumbai' (Bombay) – the locals in 'Mumbai' even refer to the place as 'Bombay', not 'Mumbai'.

The press don't refer to Swansea as 'Abertawe', Finland as 'Suomi', Munich as 'Muenchen' or Florence as 'Firenze' when writing in English, so why do they do it for Asian placenames?

Just wondering…

I'm not sure but I think Myanmar is the offical name of the country.

In the same way that we don't refer to 'Siam' or 'Persia' anymore.

Though I agree about Mumbai.

The U.S. and U.K. still call it Burma for various reasons.

Well speaking as a Taff myself, maybe understandable guilt over cultural imperialism at least re Beijing :-)

Bangorstu is right. Myanmar is the official name of the country. They choose it.

China Sends Military Jets To The Myanmar Border After Bombing Raid Kills 4 Chinese Nationals

"Beijing has sent fighter jets to its border and summoned Myanmar's ambassador after a Yangon airstrike within China killed four citizens. The bombing was part of Myanmar's offensive against rebels in its north.

Fighter jets monitored China's border to Myanmar on Saturday after a bomb from a Myanmar aircraft hit a sugarcane field in the Chinese border city of Lincang and killed four people. Nine others were injured, news agency Xinhua reported.

The strike, which came as Yangon's forces were battling rebels in the north at the Chinese border, followed a similar incident some days back when a stray shell from Myanmar exploded in Chinese territory.

The jets were sent to "track, monitor, warn and chase away" Myanmar military aircraft flying near the shared border, news agency DPA quoted the Chinese Air Force spokesman Shen Jinke as saying…"

Very slow in their response, which is unusual.

I suspect the above actions are to placate its citizens, since no doubt, word has finally filtered out to them, and they are expecting a response.

Yes, I still call Iran "Persia" sometimes, it's older name. I think it "sounds" better … maybe even more "respectful" ? Of course it's much easier to refer to Mesopotamia or other parts as Babalyon, as "Iraq". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babylonia The "artificial" name given to it by long dead European politicians …

China Warns That It Will Take 'Decisive' Steps If Myanmar Repeats Raid That Killed 5 Chinese Farmers

"Beijing sent forces to patrol its southwestern border with Myanmar after a bomb killed four Chinese citizens in an area where violence between Burmese rebel groups and troops has spread and strained ties with China.

On Sunday, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang expressed Beijing's dismay at the fighting that has sent hundreds fleeing across China's border. Mr. Li called Friday's bombing "deeply distressing" and said China would take measures to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens living near the area.

"We have the responsibility and the capacity to firmly safeguard stability in the border areas between the two countries and protect the life and property of our people," Mr. Li said during a nationally televised news conference…"
