Seems the Hundred Days aren't quite over yet…

The good news is that, as best I could ascertain, no shots were exchanged over the matter.

Dear Editors,
I meant to cross-post to Dutch Belgian Wargaming and French Wargaming as well, but obviously made a mistake. Since there's no way for me to change cross-posting, could you correct this please, then erase this second message? Many thanks! – M.

Tell you what. Bring out a Waterloo coin for the Dutch and the Belgians. Then give the French a coin celebrating the hero of Verdun, Marshal Philippe Pétain.

"The Royal Mint has launched its own £5.00 GBP coin commemorating the battle, with a design showing the handshake between Wellington and Blücher after their victory."
[Daily Mail]

I think we should also reissue the old £5.00 GBP note showing the Duke with the caption: "Hard pounding – we shall see whose currency lasts the longest."

Shame, an opportunity lost! The Battle of Waterloo was one where both sides "won"; it would have been TERRIBLE for France if Napoleon I had triumphed. And, one of the rare occasions when cross-European cooperation produced a good result!

Those pesky Belgians trying to stir up trouble between Europeans again!! They have already issued a World war One commemorative Euro. The cads….funny though, I can't find where the French objected to that one?? ;)

The French will never object to anything that portrays them as the military victors/most cultured/best cuisine/most beautiful women &c. &c.

That's why they idolise the Corsican Tyrant, because he provided them with a string of victories they can celebrate – Austerlitz, Jena &c – but try to ignore the fact he actually lost the wars that bear his name and died a lonely, bitter exile, blaming everyone – including the French (if I had had an English army I should not have found myself here) – except himself for his defeat.

Understandable – yes. To be pandered to by preventing other nations celebrating their successes against the French – a resounding no!

(if I had had an English army I should not have found myself here)

Wow, did he really say that? Shame it's not quoted more often.

Mind you, if he'd had an "English" navy he wouldn't have ended up there, either.

"Understandable – yes. To be pandered to by preventing other nations celebrating their successes against the French – a resounding no!"

Come on. No one is talking about that. The Belgians or we Germans can celebrate Waterloo as long as we want.

But to force the looser of a battle to use money with that battle written on it?

As i asked in the other thread: Would the people of the US South accept a dollar note with Gettysburg on it?

1ngram13 Mar 2015 8:15 a.m. PST

Of course they would – the ones that are black anyway!

The people of the southern United States, of all races, have proven in the Spanish-American War, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and the present wars that they are good Americans. I have no doubt the vast majority of them would not give it another thought to have money with Gettysburg on it.

Abraham Lincoln is on the penny and the $5 USD bill and they have been in use for a very long time all over the nation.

If, accidently, a small number of the 2 Euro pieces weren't destroyed, what would they be worth?

Jemima Fawr14 Mar 2015 4:44 a.m. PST

Last Year: Half a beer.

This year: A beer.

Next year: Many beers (if the Greek shenanigans continue).

At least that's my experience of spending Eureichsmarks.
