Ok so the Dux Brittaniorum bug has dug in, except bar the basics and anything I can source on youtube, I know virtually nothing of the period.I'm intereted in starting an Irish/ Scottish Warband. Amy suggestions for books on the Irish, Welsh and Celtic, Gaelic and Pictish cultures in Arthurian Britain? Cheers in advance |

I'm more interested in the Picts but try The picts and scots at war by Nick aitchison and a new history of the picts by Stuart mchardy. Some of Alistair Moffat stuff is good too – the faded map is an interesting overview and a good read. |

It depends on how deep you want to go – but although its a very technical book Patterson's Cattle Lords and Clansmen is a transformative read. John T Koch is a great scholar and his work on early Welsh poems is chockful of military information. Again though this is a very specialist read and perhaps not for the beginner. Lesley Alcock's stuff is scholarly, cheap and accessible if dated now. The much criticised Age of Arthur by Morris is still worthwhile as an introduction and overview. It might be your best bet. Chris Gidlow's Reign of Arthur is good on the sources and their interpetation. Cheap too now well worth getting. I have The Picts and Scots at war by Nick Aitchison and sad to say I did not find it of any use at all. There is not really a definative volume that brings together all the information you want in an accessible way. |
