I have updated my blog. Today's blog-update is about hair. Was there a Makedonian haircut as a writer thinks? (I don't know, if anyone out their knows anything I would be happy to know more about that) What about beards? Read more abot this here: kestros.blogspot.com |

Up to Philip II's time, Macedonian men wore beards. Alexander introduced a fashion for shaving: Once, when all preparations had been made for battle, his generals asked him whether there was anything else in addition to what they had done. "Nothing," said he, "except to shave the Macedonian beards." And as Parmenio expressed his surprise, Alexander said, "Don't you know that in battles there is nothing handier to grasp than a beard?" (Plutarch, "Sayings of Alexander") Have a look at "The Bearded King and the Beardless Hero" chapter at link which also mentions Alexander's long hair. |

Thanks for the link! Very interesting. But what about Perseus (last Makedonian king), he was bearded on his coins. Why and when the break with shaving? As I descibe (very short) the Makedonian haircut is described as "close cropped", sounds very different to Alexander's long hair. |

Irrelevant, but too good to leave out: the Spartans favoured long hair, saying it made a handsome man more beautiful, and an ugly one more frightening. |

I read somewhere the suggestion that Alex banned beards because, at least when he was an adolescent, he couldn't grow a decent one himself and was jealous of his hairy veterans. |

..more to the point.. with all these hunks hopping around naked – what about the Brazilian???!!!! lol Well a haircut wouldn't remove the most handy thing down there to grab, would it? Not sure there's an acceptable solution to this. |

JJartist: Thanks for that. I like that fresco a great deal. I am convinced that the cap worn today throughout Afghanistan and surrounding areas is a direct descendent of that cap worn by the left most figure in that image. When you find something that works, it takes a lot to change it. |
