How are these sculpted onto figures. I cant imagine rolling tiny beads and trying to stick them on?

Some do … another 'trick' is to use the end of a fine tube then smooth around the 'button' it prints into the putty (once upon a time, this might be the end of a ballpoint pen with the ball popped out) …

I find an old mechanical pencil does nice buttons. You can find various sizes of ink pens that is the click type. Leave the pen in, not clicked out and you can get some interesting sizes for buttons.
