Well? I've been meaning to get into it for a couple of years, been putting it on the shelf, but have got figures etc planned (Irish) and was going to get the Rulebook and Supplements. This has happened in the past, so before I make the same mistake again, is there any rumours of a second edition of Saga? I know Crescent and the Cross clarifies some rules, but I don't want to drop £50.00 GBP+ on the rules and supplements if there's even a glimmer of a possible new edition. Anyone heard anything? |

Why would there be a second edition? What's wrong with the current edition? |
John the OFM | 09 Mar 2015 7:34 a.m. PST |
Of course. A bigger printing and a higher price. The changes will be enough to "force" the holders of the 1st to up editions, particularly if they play tournament style. |

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the first edition, just, as OFM says, it is likely. It's been out a few years now, and it has happened to me in the past. Including a classic moment when I finally gave in and bought the FOW rulebook at my local store along with the latest edition of WI, got home and there was an announcement of a new FOW edition in that very issue… |

it is likely. Really? Well if you think it's likely, you'd be well advised to hold off buying them until such time as they publish the 2nd Edition. OTOH … perhaps the OFM had his sarc mode on? |

Blimey. I just asked if anyone had heard any whispers, just that it is, yes, likely, because rulesets usually go through revisions/editions. I'd be happy to discover they weren't. Hmmm. Maybe I should have joined and asked in their forum… |

I have not heard any talk of this so far. C&C just came out, so I doubt they would make it obsolete this quickly. They haven't even come out with supplements for it yet. I would not hesitate to get the rules. |

I haven't heard anything in regards to a second edition. If it were to happen it probably wouldn't be for some time so I would recommend buying a copy now and get playing. Christopher |

Thanks. That's good to know. I noticed that Byzantine supplement with the folder was oop, so I was wondering. Not any slight on Studio Tomahawk, just thought it would have been just my luck! |

There should be a second edition and it should be a box set with a flimsy rule insert and two plastic armies. The plastic armies should be the two least popular forces. All the battle boards should be improved to make them better than the old boards. And it should be expensive! Yeah, that would be cool! |
Mister Tibbles | 09 Mar 2015 12:00 p.m. PST |
Well, the rules are already expensive, so there's one checked off your list, Sir Walt. |

C&C rules clarify or supersede the original SAGA rules. It is as close to a '2nd edition' of the rules as there is. That being said, you need the other books to get the army list specifics. I have heard nothing on the forums about a 2nd edition. |

Thanks. I had read that in a review of C&C. I'm currently juggling so many projects at the minute it might be a while before I begin actually painting/collecting SAGA, was just thinking of getting the rules a bit beforehand. But it's good to know. That C&C hardback looks really nice though, and I thought maybe Studio Tomahawk may have been thinking of compiling all the SAGA releases into one like it. |

What are the perceived failings of Saga (1st edition: sic) that would necessitate a second edition? I can't see any so a thread like this makes me feel I'm missing something! |
axabrax | 10 Mar 2015 8:41 a.m. PST |
C&C is the second edition. The next book will likely be an Arthurian / Dark ages supplement. All you have to do to understand the Saga release strategy is to look at Gripping Beast's figure range. They will make a lot more money boosting sales to their pre-existing figure ranges plus a few new figures than producing an expensive new hard back with a rehash of the rules. Saga is a medium primarily for GB to sell figures. |

Are you saying the supplement with the Rus and Byzantines is OOP? Please say that's not so |

A bit of clarification. C&C is the definitive set of rules, but there will be an errata sometime in the first half of this year which will bring owners of the original rule book up to speed. Definitely worth considering getting C&C though, for the examples and detail. There are no plans for a "2nd edition" or compilation that I am aware of. But there are plenty of things in the pipeline The supplements drop out of print every now and then, but they will be reprinted. Studio Tomahawk are independent of GB, but obviously they have shared goals, and it also true that there are obvious candidate periods for future supplements. Cheers CW |

And Osprey and TFL must also be tentacles of this conspiratorial octopus. Between Saga and its supplements, both Dux, and LR GB's sales must have soared in recent years. I fully understand GB's commercial logic: many online commentators have been opining that full size armies in 28mm are slipping out of reach of the average wargamer; but true skirmish games don't require enough figures to sustain adequate profits for a company pricing to meet historical miniaturists cost expectations. And GB has a huge investment in Dark Ages and medieval masters and moulds that has to be commercially justifiable. The big skirmish force of say 40 to 80 figures is a workable compromise, being affordable for gamers while at the same time moving sufficient quantities of product. It therefore became incumbent upon GB itself to provide hobbyists with a quality game requiring forces in this size range that would be appealing enough to generate the required sales. The plan seems to have succeeded. |

Well MH Dee I understand what you wanted to know and why!! I'm don't know whether or not anything planned but at least I haven't grabbed the wrong end of the stick and got in a massive about it if it's any consolation. |
