Hi guys, I'm about to start a Napoleonic French Line Infantry basing project for BLACK POWDER. My plan for a Battalion is to have 6 bases of 6 figures each for the Grenadier, Voltiguer, and 4 Fusilier companies with the 6 figs mounted on each base in 2 ranks of 3. Base sizes are planned at 60mm x 40mm. I will also have 3 60mm x 20mm bases of 2 Voltiguers each for skirmish order for that company when needed. For the BLACK POWDER French players out there, this seem reasonable for being able to represent the Battalion in line, attack column, march column and square formations or are there some hidden bear traps I don't see using this basing? Thanks, Clay |

I've always based my 28mm Napoleonic infantry on 40x40mm bases, 2 ranks of 2 figures with 4 separately based skirmishers. Cavalry are based in pairs on 50x50mm bases. A lot will depend upon your opponents basing! |

Hello Clay. Black Powder rules allow a great level of freedom for the number of models to be put on the bases and for bases dimensions. In regards of the number of models, the idea of having 6 models per base is perfectly fine; many players prefer that configuration and the unit definitely look impressive on the field with 36 models. Both me and JimDuncanUK who have kindly replied to you, we prefer to base our French Infantry on 4 models per 40mm x 40mm bases, which means that the regiments may look less compact, but for the rules sake, it would be exactly the same because the important in the rules is the size of the whole unit. In terms of bases dimensions instead, if the players you play with adopt the same or similar base dimensions as yours it would not be a problem. If instead you expect to be able to play with your army in tournaments or events or a variety of other players that you may meet in the future, then I would recommend to diminish the size of your bases, as dimensions more within the average range would make your models more adaptable, while the more extreme dimensions you have chosen (in particular the 60 mm frontage) may cause some problems. As far as my experience goes, the preferred bases are either the 40mmx40mm – 4 models, 2 front 2 behind – each base representing one company; or the 45/50mmx45/50mm – 6 models, 3 front 3 behind – each base representing a company. I hope this helps! Cheers, Rich (Warlord Games Customer Service) |
