A couple of years ago I bought a job lot of second hand figures for the Sudan campaigns. They are about 50/50 Peter Pig and Old Glory, unfortunately not really compatible within the same army so I am going to paint some for use and some for selling on. The clincher in making my choice will be the availability of suitable general/higher command figures as I see that there are none amongst the figures I bought and neither manufacturer seems to offer such castings. I favour Peter Pig for my own use at the moment but could anyone tell me if compatible staff figures are available from any other manufacturer?

Most of my Sudan British are PP. As well as some of their cavalry command figures, I also use various higher command figures from Minifigs, Essex and, best of all, Blue Moon. All are 'compatible enough' with PP to my mind.

By coincidence, most of my Mahdists are OG, and I'm slowly replacing them with PP as well, because they tower over them. There was talk of a Mahdist High Command pack from Blue Moon, but good 'generals' are less easy to find.

Head width is more important for compatibility than height. PP Sudan have relatively small, narrow heads. Their AWI a tiny bit broader, I think. PP Sudan perhaps thus closest to Mini Figs. Essex and Old Glory Colonials (the few I've seen) go together.
Could anyone comment on whether Blue Moon head size fits the broader Essex/Old Glory or the narrower PP/Mini Figs Sudan??

Gallia Miniatures offer a mounted British officer that might help. Gallia also have a mounted Egyptian officer. Gallia fit very well with Peter Pig. I use PP, Gallia and Mikes Models.

For my Egyptian mounted officer I used an Essex ACW Union general with a head swap using a Peter Pig head with a fez.

If you are interested in the early period Hicks Pasha etc. I suggest you hold on to your OG which are fairly compatible with Essex and Blue Moon because of the impending release of a very nice range of 15/18mm Bashis, Bazingers, Shaiqia etc. which are compatible with Blue Moon in particular.

I have seen the Bashis and they are very nice indeed. There are 4 poses; 2 advancing, 1 firing and 1 reloading. Each pose comes with 4 or 5 different head dresses. They are accompanied by a bugler, 2 different officers and 1 NCO. They are dressed in Zouave style with broad waist sash and cartridge belt. As such, can be used for either Bashis on foot or the Turkish Battalion. Hopefully these and the Bazingers will be available shortly.

Thanks for all the advice.

I confess that I had completely discounted Blue Moon after playing an opponent who used medieval figures which he said came from the company. I can't say I was impressed with the figures and so did not even think to look at them for colonials. Having seen their website I am inclined to change my mind and I will send off for a few packs to see them for myself.

Thanks again
