So I got the book, and while waiting for it to arrive, I'd like to ask a couple more questions about it.

Does it have character advancement written into it? Do the characters have levels or do I need the RPG books to apply experience points and such things into the game?

I was also thinking about getting AD&D adventure modules and play them out with the skirmish system, maybe giving created characters some bonuses like hitpoints and inventories for loot and such. I'd like to play a RPG-lite game with the system.

My plan is to have a project per adventure module, getting all the appropriate models and terrain and then play the adventure out on the tabletop.

Well, I guess I'm into this for the long run. I just bought the Player handbook and Arabian Adventures. I'll probably create PCs with the rules, and convert them into the Battlesystem rules for play. I hope it's easy to include character advancement into the game.

Now off to find the first adventure module for the Al Qadim -setting.

Cool. I haven't played the battlesystem in 10 years. Too many rules, not enough time. Keep us informed of your progress.

Level advancement can be handled by the PHB for the RPG. It will require a little juggling, but not too difficult. BS Skirmish has XP awards for creatures you kill. It will be a simple matter to compare, and convert as needed, the two XP systems, to allow RPG-lite play, using the BS Skirmish rules. Cheers!

I'm actually just gearing up to play my first ever Battlesystem Skirmish. Sadly, it looks to be a solo affair. I might have some questions too.

I got the book, reading through it now. I like it so far. I will want to add level advancement from the AD&D Player Guide and play modules with the rules.

Keep us posted. I felt it was well written. It does seem to be something that depends heavily upon the AD&D core rules, but that is understandable. The painting guide, in the Appendix in the back, is dated, but still something to learn from. So far, I have only played one-off games, but the rules will allow for ongoing campaigns, if desired.

If you look at the 5th Ed. mass battles rules that were discussed here recently, they have some interesting concepts which can be grafted onto the BS Skirmish rules, wholesale. They discuss units being salvaged after a defeat; when to call it quits for the loser, before they are annihilated completely; and some other tidbits of useful 'rules'. They are only nine pages long, and they are free to download. Cheers!
