"THE voice on the other end of the radio said: "There are two people digging by the side of the road. Can we shoot them?" It was the middle of the night during my first week in Afghanistan in 2010, on the northern edge of American operations in Helmand Province, and they were directing the question to me. Were the men in their sights irrigating their farmland or planting a roadside bomb? The Marines reported seeing them digging and what appeared to be packages in their possession. Farmers in the valley work from sunrise to sundown, and seeing anyone out after dark was largely unheard-of…" Full article here link Amicalement Armand |

This is more about how our military is turning in a bunch of pansys. Having to ask if they can pull the trigger, then have some officer on the other end of the line wondering if he can pass the buck to someone else. But having to make the decision and then hopes that the soldiers on the other end miss. Plus he considers that if a soldier does pull the trigger and ends killing someone that they are no longer a soldier but… A KILLER This is what our military is coming to. Turning into a bunch of pansy's/sissy's who need permission to shoot their weapon. |

Mithmee Actually his article strikes me as honest and thoughtful albeit illustrative of a culture of hierarchial decision making that probably is ill suited to a dynamic situation but i really don't think that the old drill sgt pansy/sissy stuff (given the US military's position on gay soldiers) is the appropriate way to critique it (I believe well known pansies like Alexander the Great were quite ruthless) |

Rules of Engagement suck. They also prevent killing most innocents (for Afghan values of "innocent") I am not overly offended by requiring the troops to call in for permission to fire at individuals not obviously armed. Personally, I'd be hard-pressed to shoot them. But the fact that this officer considers his troops to be killers as opposed to Marines, that's [expletives deleted] inexcusable. |

All true … And as I keep saying, if the US and others were not worried about non-combatant losses, damage to infastructure, etc. … Some places would look like the dark side of the moon .. |
