… battle tank were delivered to Russian army.

"According Sputnik Russian press agence, the new Russian-made T-14 main battle tank based on the Armata platform will be presented at a night-time parade rehearsal as soon as Friday, March 6, 2015. The Russian next-generation T-14 Armata main battle tank, due to be unveiled at the Red Square Victory Day parade in Moscow on May 9 will appear in public at an advance parade rehearsal, according to a source in the defense industry, Russian news website Lenta.Ru reported.

The latest rehearsal for what is planned to be the biggest Victory Day parade in Russia's recent history is scheduled for Friday, at 6:45 a.m., so it's possible that the Armata tank will appear as soon as this week.

However, the tank will appear in a camouflage that will distort it's silhouette and make it impossible to examine its exact configuration. The technique, practiced by car manufacturers to protect prospective models from espionage, will likely be adapted for the Armata. Man… I have to make this thing in 3mm!

Dumb thought. Looking at this and the new Peruvian frigate in the other thread. Why is it that guns seem to have this slab sided covers to the barrels on all this new stuff. Is there a real reason beside futuristic aesthetics?

Please do make it in 3mm – that would be awesome. I'd definitely buy some!

Not sure on the sleeves, but perhaps some sort of thermal protection/insulation, like they put on guns on the Chieftian, back in the day, and some others, I suspect, to prevent the barrels warping from the heat.

The slab sided sleeve might be spall protection for the gun tube from heat rounds that strike the upper hull or turret front. The main armor may protect the tank from the heat round, but if the gun tube gets damaged the tank might have to retire from the fight.

Some of those covers might also be to reduce radar cross section. Probably not on the Armata, but the PL01 appears to be usable for that.

And who's making an Armata in 15MM?

@Javelin:

Please keep me informed regarding your 3mm plans.

You bet, Benjamin! After the Leopards, of course!

Note that the above picture has been widely circulated but appears to come from artists impressions.

Best to wait until May before designing models as the actual configuration may be quite different.
