Hi all,

I've been away a while due to health issues but now I'm back on the mend I'm getting back into painting stuff and bought some boxes of house of campaign ecw for a new project. I've never done this period and wondered how's best to base them. I figured around 4 figures per base but can anyone help with what size base to use – frontage mm? Depth mm? and how many figures per base, does 4 sound ok?

Thanks in advance,

Gaz.

Do you know what ruleset you will be using?

Gary Bramley01 Mar 2015 9:17 a.m. PST

Not yet, so just want to base them in a way that will fit in as a rough base army if that helps and fit in with as many systems as possible. This is all new to me as only really done ww2 in past.

Thanks,

Gaz.

If you are that unsure then base each figure individually on a magnetic base and make steel sabots an appropriate size for whatever ruleset you decide upon.

A bit like this:

Good to read that your on the mend and have got interested in the ECW.

I'd recommend that you at least read a couple of rule sets before basing them. That written I have my armies based for George Gush WRG and that basing is fine for everything I've played over the years.

I'd recommend that you do some Googling to have a look at how others have based their units so you can decide what aesthetic appeals to you the most.

I'd also suggest that you play about with some figures, blu-tac and card and see what looks good to you.

after playing around with card and blue tac and looking around on line ive decided to put 4 figures on a 30mm x 30mm base similar to the black powder in 28mm. once again thanks for all your helpful advice.

cheers,

gaz.

Picking a set of rules will definitely help you sort things out. Black Powder is probably as good as any to reflect the basic basing concept. Some of the problem being that some units were 2 to 1 shot v.s. pike while others were a 1 to 1 ratio. I find that six 20mm(1/72)figures fit easily on a 2in X 2in base. I use three bases per unit (1 pike 2 shot) to represent about 550 men six ranks deep. If I were more concerned with accuracy I would use four 1 1/2in bases (2 pike 2 shot) for units with a 1 to 1 ratio. I use the Carnage & Glory II rule set which is computer moderated so I can set the ratio to whatever I want and not worry too much about if the figures are exactly right. I believe Black Powder is the same way. Other rules that require base removal like FOG-R and Warr Without An Enemy might be a bit more tricky.
