Would anyone know of a website or source where I can find which British Army units were stationed in the North American colonies from the time of the French & Indian War until the eve of the American Revolution? I'm also looking for information about what units were garrisoned in which major cities (Boston, New York, etc.).

Thank you.

"Toward Lexington: The Role of the British Army in the coming of the American Revolution" by John Shy.

Gives an excellent overview of where British regiments were from the end of the F&IW/Pontiac's Rebellion, to the outbreak of the AWI. More importantly, it highlights the regiments' relationships with local communities (surprisingly positive) and how important their presence was to the local economy.

Some very useful maps show how the distribution of the regiments shifted gradually from the frontier forts to the East Coast after the Proclamation Line and Quebec Acts of 1763/64 and 1774 that removed the Indians' grievances and exacerbated those of the Colonists.

There's a particularly interesting passage which discusses how – less than a year after the Boston Massacre – American recruits rush to join British regiments when war with Spain threatens over the Falkland Islands in 1771 (leading to the resurrection of the Light/Picquet Company in British units).
