How much does weight of armor/equipment effect movement speed? I'm specifically thinking about on the battlefield, as opposed to strategic movement.

I would think that the leader of a unit might have better (ie, heavier) armor, but when it came time to charge, his lads wouldn't charge and leave him behind, and that he would strain to keep up with them. I recently read a set of rules that had light infantry (guys with only a shield) moving at one speed, while heavy infantry moved at half that rate, and medium infantry (partially armored) figures had a movement rate midway between the other two.

Does anyone have any good sources to point to or even re-enactor examples?

Medieval infantry did n't really move much at any speed other than a brisk walk, so it's probably not that important a factor most of the time. Be wary of medieval wargame rules; We've yet to find a half-way decent set for England/France/Scotland in the 14th C.

Why did you ask this twice, two days running? Just curious….

Leaders probably have lighter armourand better designed to soread the weight. In periods where they have heavier armour, for example longer mail we have to presume that the increased protection is a good trade off .

Anecdotal evidence from reenactment also suggests men in appropriate armour move more confidently and directly than men who might have to do more dodging …

Thank you all very much!

Great War Ace, to answer your question, I typed my query, and clicked on Post. Nothing happened (I should have got the opportunity to cross-post), so I clicked again, click, click, click, and still nothing. So far as I could tell, it just wasn't working, so I went away and looked in the home page, where my query had not posted. So, I quit, and tried again the next day. Same thing happened. I was actually on my way to post a third time when I found my queries in the forum message boards. I've written Bill about this--don't know if TMP hates me or just what.
