The converged Maryland/Delaware Continental unit as they appeared at Hannah's Cowpens on the day of the battle. My favorite unit of the entire AWI. The heart of the Continental Army…the Maryland and Delaware Continentals. Every bit as staunch as their British counterparts, these soldiers stood with the best that the mighty British Army could muster and gave as good as they got.
I was excited to get these done and am very happy with the result. The Command stand is very close to being finished and I have to choose a flag. I'm prejudiced, but I love these figures. The choice of heads makes every figure look like a different pose. And the Over Mountain Men blend in so well when you use them as militia or mixed in with the Continentals. My Southern Army is really beginning to take shape. I took some overhead shots, so that you can see the entire bases. I do things a bit different than Fife and Drum and generally have 36 figures per unit. I base 6 figures to a stand and six stands comprise a unit. No special reason, I just like the way they look. Very nice. My only question would be why you have your continentals in yellow hat trim, a color usually associated with artillery? Also, if you are doing late war, you can give them a white cockade over the black one to signify the alliance with France. Also, those men with spatter dashes (spats) should be all black, or perhaps a faded gray. These items were made of linen or wool and blackballed to help make them waterproof. |

Actually, yellow hat trim was not that common in the AWI (although it was quite common in European armies). The Delaware Regiment was unusual in that respect as far as infantry units went. Quite a lot of infantry units used black tape instead of white. |

Painter Jim, they are 28 mm figures.
As for the yellow trim, I've seen sources that show it and I liked
the way it looked. It seems to have been a Md/Delaware thing. |

That's fine if someone simply likes a color for something, but I would be interested in seeing what your source was. I have worked with a lot of MD re-enacting units and I have yet to see one with yellow tape on their hats. Just curious. |

Mollo shows Hall's Delaware Regiment with yellow tape (plate 99), the plate description is on page 187. Not sure how common it actually was. |

In some of his comments Babits indicates that the Delaware continentals used yellow tape during the southern campaign. I believe some of these can be accessed through the Battle of Camden website. |

A quick skim of Katcher's book revealed that the Delaware troops took some pride in being the "only" unit in the army with yellow tape on their hats. This probably excluded the artillery. Hats listed for the Maryland troops revealed a number bound in white tape, a good number of round hats noted in deserter descriptions – only one man referenced with both white and yellow tape on his fur hat (which likely was a higher end cocked hat, not a coonskin cap). No other mention of yellow for MD troops, though early on it was noted that white tape was secured, most likely for the hats. |

As mentioned above this is a converged unit of Md and Delaware
troops. If it makes you happy to think that the yellow taped hats are the Delaware guys, then go right ahead. |

They are your troops, so they have to please their master. :-) Just a good thread about the yellow tape. I didn't think it was correct for MD troops. Curious but at times MD helped supply the DE troops. Not sure about hats though. |

"Not sure about hats though." I don't think that there is much about AWI uniforms that anyone can be "sure" about. Except for the few surviving uniform pieces, everything eles is pretty much open to conjecture.
Read all you can then take what seems to be the best information to you and go from there. In the end, they are really just toys. |

There are a good bit from deserter descriptions (a lot of round hats, by they way), and a lot of records for materials issued too. What makes the rebels so hard to pin down is the wide range of uniforms issued to units over the years. The standing down then reforming of units using the same number doesn't help either. Everyone paints their figures to please them. I use re-enacting standards more or less. I try to be as historically accurate as I can. A lot of my Americans are simply in blue coats faced red, or brown faced red. That seems to cover a good bit. Of course my militia can also stand in for early continentals as well. No yellow hats though, other than artillery. :-) |

Yes HG, what you say makes perfect sense. I also try to be as close as possible. Ergo the yellow tape. I still find Mollo to be my bible on the AWI.
It's probably the most used book in my AWI collection. |
