I don't use bottle tops for painting figures though, I use medicine bottles, take an empty bottle and put your figure onto the cover and then you can hold the bottle in your hand while you paint your figure…works for me :)

Thats a good idea CavCrazy, easier to hold onto the bottle, something else to add to my pile of "useful items" and will drive my wife nuts :)

Just one question: at what point do you put on varnish? Spraying before basing or after?

I varnish all my figures before I base them, a coat of gloss, followed by a decent matt varnish, and I brush it on, as I have had disasters with spray varnish.
