Has anyone had any experience with this service?

vtsaogames20 Feb 2015 9:38 p.m. PST

Happy with more than one army. Friends used him too.

spontoon20 Feb 2015 9:42 p.m. PST

If your standards are not too exacting , especially as regards colours to be used, fine.

My experiences with them were great. Send along pictures of how you want them painted. Or send along an already painted figure. They'll paint them exactly like the example. Make sure that any pictures you send, are exactly the way you want them painted.

Been using them for years…I highly recommend them.

One thing though, make sure you send an accurate photo or painting of the figure you want painted with the miniatures. If you do that you avoid color issues.

One good thing they do is take a picture of a figure after it's painted, and email it to you for you to approve before they finish the rest.

Send exact info and be anal about it. If you leave anything out, you are in for a big surprise. They aren't historians. Pretty decent painters, but no historians.

Absolutely excellent service. Yes they are not historians and you have to give them guidance on the colours, but they will do everything to get it correct.

I've had great results using them. But, to echo the above, give colours for everything! Do not presume they will "know" anything at all – from flesh tones to boot colours to weapons.

If you tell them – they will paint it. If not – well you may get some unexpected results.

vtsaogames21 Feb 2015 6:23 a.m. PST

They are not historians and may not 'get' some cultural references.

Some one early on asked for figures to be painted as African big game hunters. They were painted as Africans.

I sent pictures of how my ACW figures should look. They came back fine. They are the figures (both sides) in my Shiloh AAR.

Send them a painted miniature as sample and you won't have any problems with them.
Highly recommended.

Recommended as regards painting but not as regards handling figures (10mm). Have had to carefully straighten figures out on their bases on more than one occasion.

combatpainter Fezian21 Feb 2015 9:47 a.m. PST

Best is to give them an example. Send them a painted figures with the unit.

I like them, though I've only used them once 9 years ago. I sent them about 500 15mm French Napoleonics with pictures to paint to a wargames standard. They turned out great.

Ragbones21 Feb 2015 2:12 p.m. PST

Have had hundreds of 15mm figures painted very well by the fine artists at Fernando BUT…my friends and I have noticed a drop off in the quality of 25mm figures. Over the past several years one of my best friends has had 25mm figures painted for a Maxmillian in Mexico project and we've noticed a rather significant change in the quality of painting. The figures painted at the beginning of the project are absolutely beautiful but more recent figures have much less detail and are obviously painted with less care and probably more haste. I'm a pretty fair painter (a couple of HMGS East painting competition awards) so I believe I'm a reasonable judge of this.

Having written that, I want to note that Fernando has always maintained a generous guarantee for his customers. If you're not happy with the figures or there's been a mistake then you can send them back for correcting. Overall, our group has been very happy with Fernando, sending literally thousands of figures for painting. In fact, we have a batch with them now and will send another one after we receive the current figures back.

Use them several times and have been extremely happy with service and results.

I guess I am in the minority but I had a bad experience with them and will not go back. I was surprise that I was restricted to how much uniform information I could send them. They said they have all the uniform info. that they will ever need. Most painters want all the info. they can get.

So my friend and I went in on the same order. They got
the uniforms wrong and didn't bother to paint the faces of the figures.

So I guess they needed that uniform information after all. In addition, for some reason, they cut all the flag poles off of my OG figs. We had to go back and re-paint some of the figures and add flag poles. Not a good experience.

I have all my painting done right here in the good old USA. There are just too many advantages to having them painted by someone that is familiar with the historical period. Someone I pick up the phone and call.

A painter that speaks English well enough that I can explain what I want done and wants all the uniform information I can get to them. In addition to having a huge library of uniform books of his own. The person I am dealing with is the person who will be actually painting them.

Here are some Blue Moon/AB French Light Cavalry painted by Fernando for me to their showcase quality.
I sent some copies of Elting prints as well as some sample figures that were copied to the detail and very well so!!
In other words, I was very pleased, and will go back for more..

I've used them and they worked out ok. I sent along painted examples but when I got them back I could see that the smaller details I had painted on my figures were skipped even though I was asking for the Super Showcase level. It wasn't too hard for me to fix that and make sure all of the figures matched my painted examples.
I would agree with Ragbones, their quality is still good but has dropped off a bit. Overall they are worth the try and if you don't like them then there are other painting companies that can do a similar job at a similar price (Big Battalions comes to mind).
