This is for hail caesar or any other big unit game. What looks best? 2 ranks 24 figure unit or 3 rank 36 figure unit? Or mabye 3 rank for ashigaru and 2 rank for samurai? |

Search for particular battles on Google and view the images. You should find some contemporary images of the battlelines and how they were formed. |

I would look at the army in total and work from there. In this case, it means that I'd paint up two ranks for each unit, so that you have a great looking army that is all painted. That is an amazing achievement, and you'll get there faster with two ranks. Once you have enough units painted up you can go back and start to add a third rank, and see if you like it. Since the army is essentially already painted, I think you'll feel less pressure to finish it and you'll have a more pleasant experience in general. |

For my Hail Caesar armies I would stick with 2 ranks for all troops types. I used 16 man units for Samurai, Sohei, and yari armed Ashigaru, and smaller 12 man units for the missile Ashigaru. This is purely based on what looks good to me and maximizing the number of units for the amount of figures I have. I just don't think massing the Samurai as if they were Roman legions looks right. But that is just me. Here are some pictures of Rob Broom's Nagashino game, using War and Conquest. He also favours only 2 ranks for formed infantry. link Nice paint job on the "Red Devils"! |
