This is directed at Daniel S as his knowledge about this period is vast. However, if anyone else out there can help, it would be much appreciated. I am trying to find out any information about the flags carried by three units of Arkebusiers which fought in Gustav's army at Breitenfeld. They are the following Regiments: Rheingraf Otto Ludwig's Nicolas de Courville's (previously Hunecken's) Baudissin's I think they are all German units. Any information on their flags would be appreciated, even just the background colour. I realise that it is probably a long shot. Thanks |

Yes all 3 regiments were German units. The Rheingraf's and Hünecken's regiments had been raised by Christian IV of Denmark and when the Danes began negotiate for peace both regiments were transfered to Swedish service and joined the Swedish army fighting Poland-Lithuania. Baudissins regiment was recruited in the area surrounding Hamburg at the same time (1628), mainly from German mercenaries that had been in Danish service. When the Rheingraf's and Hünecken's regiments arrived in Prussia they turned in their old 'Danish' standards and instead recieved new 'Swedish' ones. The colour of the standards given to Hünecken's regiment was not recorded by the chronicler Hoppe but he did record that the Rheincount's men recieved blue standards. I don't think it is a coincidence that in 1633 an eyewitness recorded that the Rheincount's regiment had one white standard with a fringe of white and yellow and 11 pale blue standards with blue fringe. (Could be faded standards rather than made from pale blue cloth) There is an extensive Saxon report describing the Swedish army shortly before Breitenfeld. Saxon scouts watching the brigde at Wittenberg counted the Swedish army as it crossed the Elbe and also recorded the colours of the flags & standards visible. However it is far from easy to connect the Saxon descriptions to known units as the number of men and companies do not automaticly match the known Swedish order of battle at the time. A very conjectural evaluation of the Saxon report suggest that one regiment that could be Baudissin's large regiment of Arkebusiers had blue standards while a possible candidate for Courville's/Hünecken's had green standards. |

Many thanks for your help. I will now be able to finish the last units in my Swedish army. |

Poles did manage to capture some of Badussin's standards in 1628 + some (most likely from Otto Ludwig's regiment) in 1629, unfortunately they were so happy with the fact of capturing them that never mentioned how did those flags looks like :( |
