Hello! I'm new to SBH and was wondering about some fun board setups to run games on? I am open to buying or building a bit of terrain, but I already have an inn building, several trees, some boulders, and a river. I am using 25mm miniatures as they are what i had lying around spare. Any tips are greatly appreciated! |

A bridge? It seems silly, but you didn't mention it. Bridges can be important contestable points and if you already have a river, it's an easy addition. The add-on to SBH, A Song of Wind and Water (SWW) isn't at all needed for an enjoyable game, but adds just about any type of terrain you can think of (deserts, swamps and bogs, etc.) including magical terrain and also adds weather rules. It can be a good source of inspiration. But, so can all of the talented terrain makers out there. I say build what interests you--pick a theme (volcano, seashore, cursed ruin, necropolis) and go crazy. |

Objectives such as cattle pens, wells, supply wagon with broken wheel etc. It makes for a much better game than just 'kill the other guys' all the time. A few ruins are always good. |

For SBH, I always prefer to setup terrain in way that looks "nice". A 3x3 SBH table is so small anyway, that I'd say just make it look nice and set the warbands loose on it. Sounds like you've already got a good selection of terrain, though, I would agree with Randall that a couple of bridges or fords are great if you have a river since you can also make the river impassable and create some bottlenecks. If you want to see some potential table setups, you can look at the games in our last 3 summer SBH campaigns. Each of the links below takes you to a campaign overview page with links for each game of the campaign. link link link Lastly, welcome to SBH and I hope you enjoy it. It's the game that first brought my club together and it's still a game we enjoy playing 4 years later. |

Perhaps a hill, or three. |

Hrrmmm.. I'm not sure how to post them directly on here (if I even can). Is there a way? |

Sign up for a free photo hosting account like Photobucket. Then you can get a direct link to a picture and post it where ever. Xin |

Looks like a nice setup. I would suggest to move your terrain a bit toward the middle of the board. Not much happens on the edges of an SBH game. There's not usually much reason to have any terrain within a "medium" stick of the board edge. |

For some cheap terrain options, look at some of the cheap, soft plastic toy kits. The various animal sets tend to have a good mix of interestingly shaped rocks and workable trees with a little work. For the trees, ones that spread out are useful, glue to a washer for weight and paint it up before using a bit of glue on the branches to glue some flock on. For the rocks, the solid ones can be based rather easily and just need a bit of paint. |

Roads can add some interest to "empty" areas of the board. I use brown felt cut into strips for dirt roads. Not the best in appearance, but it is cheap and looks okay. |

Another easy piece of terrain to create is a standing stone. Vertical rock shape (potentially even a real rock if you find one you like), I'd use blue or pink foam for it, engrave or paint a sigil or even a few on it, place some leftover bits around it after basing it that fit the group you want to have made it, and it works well. |
