The bulk of our Victorian Colonial wargaming troops are "True 25mm" figures, like Ral Partha, Hinchlife, Falcon, etc.

One of our group stumbled on a vast box of stuff at a flea market. It included rare OOP Falcon and Frontier Italians. The Falcon became blue coated Bersaglieri, and the Frontier khaki Alpini troops.
However I need Askari, but in true 25mm.

Who has ranges currently in production of True 25mm (NOT the modern style Heroic 28mm!) Askari compatible with Ral Partha, Falcon and Frontier Victorian Colonial figures?

As a hint of what is acceptable, I have Ral Partha Bashi Bazouks, and have incorporated RSM Balkan Auxiliaries into Bashi Bazouk units also. Happily! grin

Why not use Ral Partha's Egyptians as Italian Askiris?

Why not use Ral Partha's Egyptians as Italian Askiris? Maybe Scruby's?

Try Askari miniatures, they have some nice figures

I have heard of them, but they are listed as 28mm. I want "true 25mm".

Good idea nnascati. I hadn't even thought of them.

I'd probably go with the RP Sudanese instead of the Egyptians.

Doesn't Ral Partha by Dale Kemper Great Expectations still have them in production??

nnascati Supporting Member of TMP15 Feb 2015 12:52 p.m. PST

Glad I could help. :)

Ral Partha is still in production but they do not make a true askari figure. But nnascati's suggestion is good. I took some Ral Partha Egptians and made them into Turkish Infantry so why not?

John check out this picture, the Reviresco figures are listed as 28mm but are really older figures and I have a comparison shot. I don't own any but from this image they look like they are a very good match.

Great Expectations did indeed pick up the Ral Partha colonials.

ITALWARS16 Feb 2015 4:50 a.m. PST

John
I had the same problem, many years ago, that is how to represent and game the Colonial troops of my Country..
At the beginnig we uses, with some other dedicated friends who explored with me the very first edition of TSATF and corresponded with the late aimable Editor of S&S, some Minifigs Egyptians..then we tried Ral Partha and Iron Brigade for the Askaris..in the meanwhile i purchased some few Scruby Italian Askaris..bt they where too bigs 30mm or too small 25mm (in fact 20mm)..
In the late Eighties we dediced to let it go all our precious Ral Partha and Frontier stuff and begun collecting big 25mm like WF…but still not true Askaris..and no Ethiopians at all….in a WI i saw some beautiful picts of Abbyssinians from Trent (or something similar)..but i was able just to receive, after tens of International Phone calls, jus 2 samples of Ethiopian warriors..then no way to receive a list, some answers and, of course, ordering those minis…
Irregular came to our rescue..as we commissioned some Askari Italians and some Ethiopians…quite small..but too small for our Essex, WF ecc…natives (we played only VS Mahdists as our hunt for Ethiopians had been unsuccesfull)..i suppose they are still "too big" for your Falcon/Ral Partha castings..some yeras i was able to order some very few Italian Askaris from FALCON UK..another FALCON..they are nice and try, recently , to contact them and order some..to no avail
Then..at the end..i decided to let made by a sculptor some well researched Askaris and Ethiopians in 25/28 Foundry' compatibles..and that the way in which my own ITALWARS was born…
Well…after that, other manufactures came out with what i was looking for years..Anglian (Empress), Bicorne, Askari ecc..with well researched and nice castings for the period..
So…from my long experience in the hunting for Italian Colonials..i can suggest you to develop some Eritrean Askaris units for TSATF..as they saw majority of actions..they were more interesting and best rated that Italian troops…Alpini at Adwa were few but behave like the élite they were and still are (maybe the only élite of Italian Army) while the Bersaglieri where only demotivated forces volunteers (in practice the scum of every Metropolitan unit brigaded together without even knowing thei NCO and Officers)..i suspect that they did'nt route or surrender VS the Shoans only for fear of having cut their balls :-)…so go strong with the Askaris
Figures suggestions:
As you need small type 25mm i remind that the Egyptian Inf from "IRON BRIGADE"..may you could find some in USA..was, in reality, a perfect Italian Askari..the designer probably tried to represent a Gordon Sudanese and the result was in fact one of the best Italian Asskari ever made ..
Second option i can suggest you the East Africa Italian Askaris from Raventhorpe..they are labelled under WW2 Conquest of Somaliland/Italian East Africa..in fact they are in the white pre 1912 uniform..so almost perfect for your period..and, as you probably know, also if labelled 20mm , they are big toys in good scale with Ral Partha…
If i find in my cellar one or two IRON BRGADE Egyptian i could send you a pict or also the minis
hope it helps

john,

I think that irregular are more 25mm. I brought some of their medieval figures once and they were way smaller than my normal 28mm figures.

The figure identified as Matchlock (1st figure on left in top row) in Bashytubits post looks like a Falcon USA figure….is it?

Askari Minis19 Feb 2015 8:17 a.m. PST

Askari Miniatures started business after that graphic above was printed.

Our figures are 25mm foot-to-eye; which makes them 28mm to the top of the head.

They fit in quite well with most of the mid-range figures, which they were designed to do.

Are all our figures exactly the same size? No. Nobody's are. Human beings aren't either. A figure leaning forward isn't going to be as tall as one standing up straight.

It's all somewhat subjective.

That's why I offer a Sample Pack where I'll send you a few samples of what your looking for.

I think I goofed. It's Great Endeavors not Great Expectations. Sorry for the confusion.
AND, they do not make an askari figure.
Thanks for the suggestion Nick.
