Well?

I have to love the classic Brian Bolland artwork for Dredd –

But, when push comes to shove – Jack Kirby

I'm currently digging Sean Phillips very much indeed. Richard Corben has a new comic called "Rat God" that looks very promising indeed.

DsGilbert09 Feb 2015 1:54 p.m. PST

John Byrne.

Pictors Studio09 Feb 2015 2:11 p.m. PST

I too like John Byrne a lot.

Still, my favourite is Frank Miller.

Runners up include Arthur Adams, Barry Kitson, P. Craig Russell and a big nod to Keith Giffen and Simon Bisley.

SgtPain09 Feb 2015 2:23 p.m. PST

Jack Kirby is the king of comic book artists, in my humble opinion.laugh All hail the King!

Wackmole909 Feb 2015 2:36 p.m. PST

Hal Foster, creator of Prince Valiant is my choice.
Because if you read interviews with all the great comic artists, he was their inspiration.

Rumiko Takahashi. Not that I'd kick Hayao Miyazaki or Masamune Shiro out of my home if they showed up with whisky and snacks.

Jack "The King" Kirby, 'nuff said!

I was talking about this to a friend the other day and said my favourate artist of all time was Brian Bolland. I was kind of disappointed when the OP mentioned him already. (Stole my thunder)

I don't even think there's a contest (in my opinion of course) It was also a classic time for Dredd with some of my best comic memories.

I've read a lot of comics with Jack Kirby one of my favourites as well but none compares to Mr Bolland in my books :)

Barry Windsor Smith is a good choice !

Brian Bolland also reinvented The Joker

Major B09 Feb 2015 4:55 p.m. PST

Tough call between Howard Chaykin, Mike Grell and George Perez. I guess you can tell I collected in the 1980s.

Russ Heath. John Severin. Will Elder. Jack Davis. Alex Toth. Sam Glanzman. Wayne Vasant. Robert Crumb. And last, but not least, Jack T. Chick.

Jeigheff09 Feb 2015 6:56 p.m. PST

Also, please don't forget Mort Drucker, Angelo Torres, Paul Coker, Jr., Al Jaffee, Don Martin, Sergio Aragones, and Antonio Prohias, all great MAD artists!

Gamer Diogenes09 Feb 2015 7:39 p.m. PST

Moebius, Mike Mignola, Guy Davis, Richard Corben, and John Cassady to name but a few.

Pictors Studio09 Feb 2015 7:44 p.m. PST

I always liked Mike Mignola too, he just didn't draw much stuff I was into. Cosmic Odyssey was great.

Neal Adams is insane. Read the Batman comic he wrote and drew.

After looking at all the examples you've all given, I have to say-all of them!

CeruLucifus09 Feb 2015 9:39 p.m. PST

There have been so many good artists working in comics.

I'll go for P. Craig Russell, Mike Mignola, the Gene Colan / Tom Palmer team, and John Buscema.

And I have about 85 more favorites after those 4.

It depends on my mood. Right now, my answer is Bill Sienkiewicz:

Joppyuk10 Feb 2015 5:51 a.m. PST

Frank Hampson, – haven't really taken notice of the various artists since then, just read the stories when in the mood.

KTravlos10 Feb 2015 6:23 a.m. PST

Old Period: John Buscema

Manga: Hiroaki Samura

Current Period of Comics: Guy Davis, followed by Mike Mignola and Mark Smylie.

European: Hugo Pratt

Joe Colquhoun, the artist behind Charley's War and Johnny Red, is my all time favourite.
Seeing his artwork in 'Battle' got me into comics, inspired me to draw, paint, and ultimately sculpt.
His work is a great combination of atmosphere and technical detail.

Here's one from Keith:

Wonderfully retro* and understated.

John T

* Though, of course – in the 50's it was 'current' if you see what I mean: the first Dan Dare story was written in 50/51 and set in 1996, as I recall…

snodipous10 Feb 2015 2:49 p.m. PST

Definitely Mike Mignola.

Ralph Steadman (though I don't know if he would be called a comic book artist) and R. Crumb are great too!

SaintGermaine10 Feb 2015 4:12 p.m. PST

I have a number of favorites. Steve Ditko on Spiderman and Doctor Strange. Steranko on Nick Fury Agent of Shield, Jim Starlin on Warlock etc. and Wil Eisner's:

Black Cavalier10 Feb 2015 5:00 p.m. PST

Neal Adams, Conan John Buscema & Jim Aparo

I was interested in the supernatural comics instead of the super hero ones, so Aparo's covers of the Phantom Stranger, & the Spectre for Adventure Comics, were some of my favorites.

Dasher10 Feb 2015 11:40 p.m. PST

Neal Adams.
And that was one hell of a tough call.

Patrick R11 Feb 2015 4:30 a.m. PST

Liefeld art is so intense and demanding lesser artists tried and exploded. Only Liefeld can draw in 7 timecube
dimensions at the same time.

Don Martin (assuming MAD qualifies).

Hal Foster.

Not quite comic book, but Bill Mauldin is, IMO, the greatest cartoonist ever, with Walt Kelly and Al Capp close behind.
