Just got this email:

Apparently Spartan Games is planning both a fleet wargame and a ground wargame—pretty exciting stuff! Any guesses on whether they will be designing a new system (a la LotR with Games Workshop) or if it will be a conversion of their Uncharted Seas/Firestorm Armada/Dystopian Wars game? I'm hoping for a new system, since we already have FA for space games…

Garand09 Feb 2015 11:23 a.m. PST

I just heard about this today as well. I'm pretty excited about it, especially a ground combat game!

Licensed properties are death to gaming companies.

Weasel09 Feb 2015 12:07 p.m. PST

Don't need more scifi rules.

Do need Halo infantry figures.

:-)

McWong7309 Feb 2015 12:42 p.m. PST

Very interesting. I'm hoping the ground game is 15mm, but doubt it for some reason.

billclo09 Feb 2015 1:08 p.m. PST

I'll take some of the ships, probably no interest in the ground combat stuff. :)

We recorded an interview with Neil Fawcett of Spartan Games last week. We thought it was all about their terrain kickstarter….it was, but then he mentioned Halo…

You can listen to the show here:

I would be very interested in both the fleet and the ground units.

Tgunner09 Feb 2015 3:21 p.m. PST

I would jump in too if the scalevbis right. 15mm would be perfect. Just big enough for detailed troops, small enough for lots of vehicles.

McWong7309 Feb 2015 4:14 p.m. PST

I think you nailed it Tgunner, 15mm is all about the tanks and vehicles.

Mute Bystander09 Feb 2015 4:15 p.m. PST

Ships might be useful.

Land game miniatures in 15mm would get my attention.

HALO itself… not interested.

moonfleetminis09 Feb 2015 4:34 p.m. PST

Oh im in :)

There was a Halo board game some years ago, it had pretty rad scenery, like neon-colored bridges and platforms that could be assembled in different ways. I think it also had a very weird, not to say clumsy, way of resolving combat: The gaem came with a DVD you had to put into your X-Box or DVD Player and with the remote/controller you chose different "chapters"/branches and then a short cideo sequence was shown depicting the outscome of the fight. Imagine having to to do that for every single shot one of your guys, or the Aliens, fires.

Covert Walrus09 Feb 2015 7:29 p.m. PST

So does that mean that they will have to drop Firestorm Armada, they way LEGO had to drop all SF stuff when they got the Star Wars license? :(

"I would jump in too if the scalevbis right. 15mm would be perfect. Just big enough for detailed troops, small enough for lots of vehicles."

"Land game miniatures in 15mm would get my attention."

All of these….. Conditional on the standard of the miniatures, and which game period they're covering (not keen on Halo 4 Grunts), I'd have a look.

Fool me once, Spartan Games…

But, those ship images ARE pretty.

Well, I was happy to pick-and-chose from the FA ships; hope to be happy again.

Since they say "ground combat games" I'm thinking they are planning on a Dystopian Wars -scale one (whatever that is) and a Dystopian Legions -scale one (ostensibly 28mm, really more @ 35mm or so). The latter might work for me as a source of the xenos, if not the humans.

moonfleetminis10 Feb 2015 3:33 a.m. PST

Im hoping the figures will be compatible with their other ranges, but they will probably have to make a none compatible size a la "WHFB/LoTR" in the license agreement :(

Frostie10 Feb 2015 4:48 a.m. PST

i'd like to see the land combat in 15mm scale……….or 6mm any other scale, not for me!

Cannot understand the fuss over Halo – the fluff isn't particularly good, neither are the games – but if they do a ground war some of the bits could be useful for other games.

Cannot understand the fuss over Halo…

Oh, come on. It gave us Red vs. Blue, and that's a good thing.

I always liked the looks for the fleets, would definitely be interested in the ships.

It should be noted that we already have two really good "Master Chief lookalike" lines in 15mm: GZG New Israeli and Khurasan Mid-Tech Humans in Carapace Armour:

Although it is somewhat unheard of for sci-fi, I'd love to see the Halo minis come out in 20mm. It strikes me as the perfect scale for handling small skirmishes up to large company battles. Barring that, 28mm would be my next choice, with rules for one model per player death matches and small team open-world gaming (as the original Halo was first conceived, back before Microsoft cannibalised Bungie). Sadly, the Halo that did come out was a slight shadow of its grand original vision (mostly because Microsoft doesn't care about games and was looking at the bottom line).

Spartan confirmed it will all be in plastic, made in the UK!

IP Properties are the kiss of death! Man, I'm gonna miss Spartan Games. Hope they go out AFTER GW/LOTR does….

Augustus10 Feb 2015 11:19 p.m. PST

20mm seconded.

@Cherno: I have that game. The figs are large, and made of that soft plastic/ vinyl stuff. The terrain is great. Yes, the DVD was clumsy, but the game could be played without it. They were just trying to jump in on the "interactive" DVD game fad back (which IMHO produced some universally crappy games).

The game most closely resembles Heroscape, but not nearly as well designed. But the components could easily be used to create a decent game, or used with other rules.

Helljin04 Mar 2015 9:23 p.m. PST

Wizkids also had a 28mm line of Haloclix figures. We used those on Heroscpae terrain and have had some fun skirmish games.

TheBeast Supporting Member of TMP05 Mar 2015 8:56 a.m. PST

I'm about to do some 'rebirth of hex skirmish' fiddling, and wondered what you're using for rules?

And, yes, part of the fault is some clix figs and Heroscape terrain… ;->=
